All-in-one talk, IM, IRC server and client software?
« on: January 25, 2010, 10:18:41 AM »
I am looking for some skype-like server and client software, but "free" and with the server software located on my own machine. Essentially a "free", multi operating system, multi protocol (voice, one:one chat, many:many chatrooms, and maybe even video)

I have done a search and there seem to be many possibles, but I cant see a definitive choice which ticks all the boxes.

Have you seen anything which does this all-in-one communications approach?

Regards,

Phil

I believe what you are looking for is Jabber. http://www.jabber.org
The server should be obtainable here: http://xmpp.org/software/servers.shtml

I highly recommend googling for some tutorials unless you can find something at the official site noted above.

Tell us what else you want to be able to do if it doesn't fulfill all your needs.

I dont know about server, but for client, Pidgin can talk most protocols and has a plugin available for Skype.

What "possibles" are you looking at?

Hi all,

The "thing" should be "free", should be able to install the server side onto any machine (security etc), should do voice (VOIP, SIP), should do one to one chat (IM), and many to many chatrooms (IRC), and as a bonus video. Needs to be available for any operating system.

Possibles which I have never heard of are:

Sip Communicator (alpha software....)
Qutecom (previously Wengophone)

Looking through all of this nothing seems to stick out. Lots of items do one element, but not all together.

I will have another trawl tomorrow,

Phil

My research is:

Qutecom is in the PCLOS repository

I am not sure what you mean by "the server side".

What type of use do you envisage?

Use is for work, communication between different people in different places. Something like skype except with client info being involved needs to be outside the oversight of a third party, hence "free" and entirely located on in-house servers.

Looks as if the isn't really an all-in-one system and that what may be needed is a selection of each element which makes it slightly messy,

Sounds to me like you need a private PBX set up, in which case I suggest you look into setting up Asterisk ...

Hope I am understanding your needs and this is helpful.
