Dual layer DVD issues

 I am using PCLinuxOS2009 with an ACER Aspier 5515-5879

 When I insert a blank Dual Layer DVD(memorex dvd+rdl) the new media box appears and seems to be asking me if i want to copy the cd?

When i touch the box with the cursor a caption appears that tells me it is a blank DVD, but nowhere else seems to acknowledge that.

Then, when i open K3B i get:
System locale charset is ANSI_X3.4-1968
Your system's locale charset (i.e. the charset used to encode filenames) is set to ANSI_X3.4-1968. It is highly unlikely that this has been done intentionally. Most likely the locale is not set at all. An invalid setting will result in problems when creating data projects.
Solution: To properly set the locale charset make sure the LC_* environment variables are set. Normally the distribution setup tools take care of this.


Then i try to burn and end up with this from K3B:

Waiting for media
Writing Double Layer DVD+R
Using Grisoft 7.1
Starting Disc Write...
Writing Speed 5678kb/s (4.1x)
Write Error

and the media ejects....

Download k9 kopy from the repos. It will make a one on one copy. I have never had an error with it. Give it a try.

Thanks for the advice, but i am not trying to copy a DVD which is what i think K9 is geared towards.

If there is a way to burn a prepared image that is on my hard drive or to simply burn an existing VIDEO_TS file it will work, but i couldn't find a way when i tried it.

I have a VIDEO_TS file on my hard drive that needs to be burned onto a Dual Layer DVD, only problem is that K3B is having trouble putting the data on the disk.  I can burn single layers all day................IDK if the software isn't interacting with the drive or if the Media is incompatible with the drive...........can't figure out how to update firmware on this unit...........hell, can't even find the drive in the system to get a model #...lol

I have never had a problem with k3b putting a video ar any other data on a dual layer dvd before. I might suggest trying other burning software available to us via the repos. Brasero is a excellent program for burning dvd and cd disk. You might also try simple burn. At least with these other programs you may learn if it is a k3b problem exculsevly or a problem of some other sort.

Have you tried PCC (PClinuxOS Control Center)?  It's the "Screwdriver and wrench" arranged as an "X" in the blue circle.  Run it, supply the root password, click "Hardware" on the left side, click "Browse and Configure Hardware" in the right pane, expand "CD/DVD burners" in the left pane, and select the drive listed under it.  The device details should then be listed in the right pane.

First, did you do the initial system configuration for K3B when you first ran it? It should tell you if that's been done when you run it. Second, if a dialogue box pops up when you insert the DVD, then the system has recognized the drive. K3B should also recognize the drive. Click on the drive for information, it's the topmost listing in the left panel, then it will show the drive information. Does the drive's capabilities listed match what you know of it? Check in PCC > Hardware > Browse and Configure Hardware to see the drive listing from the system.  

Do make an attempt to correct the locale problem. That particular locale (ANSI_X3.4-1968) isn't a common one. I've never seen it used. I don't think it's right. I'm not sure if it's causing your problem, but it could. You may have to ask on this forum for help with that specifically.

I tried Brasero and am convinced that the issue is the fact that my system, for whatever reason is not recognizing my media............

I attempted to open control center and it simply asks for root password, then begins to open and absolutely freezes in place............not the whole computer, just the control center application.

I have tried this after rebooting and under both my username and root..............may try different media bucause i think the recognition of the media is the issue. i think it is a firmware issue......IDK.

Thanks for all the help so far............it concerns me that i can't open control center though.

Ok, i agree, but i didn't mention in my initial post (because i was trying not to be too long winded) that when i enter the K3B setup dialog i cannot seem to find anything that would allow me to fix the problem.  Any guidance on that will be appreciated.  Certainly not dodging the issue, it has dodged me.

It's not a K3B setting, but rather a system wide setting. Try PC --> Settings --> Regional & Accessibility --> Country - Region & Language. If you set everything there correctly, K3B should use those settings automatically when doing it's setup procedure. If that's the only problem, you should then be able to burn your disks properly. If there is another problem, you should get a new error message pointing directly to it's source. If that happens, post that message and we'll see what we can do to fix it.

When you stop seeing error messages, K3B should be working properly.

All decimal and money settings looked standard...

Nothing changed.  So what should be the proper settings and why will my Administration Center not open?

OK, try 2. Open PCC --> System --> Manage localization for your system, and just follow the directions. You may have to log out and back in, or even reboot for all the changes to take effect.
