KDE4 taskbar annoyance

I actually have an issue with the taskbar and a query regarding wireless during install.

1. When moving the cursor over the menu button, or any other icon on the taskbar, I get a popup window giving my details of that particular function. This was useful when I first started evaluating my test KDE4 install, but now it is just very annoying How do I switch off this function?

2. This is just a query about a prompt that is displayed during the installation, which I found a workaround but would like to know the answer to, if there is one. During wireless setup part of the installation a message appears "Warning - The package mandi needs to be installed. Do you want to install it?" I answered "OK" to this and after this missing application was installed my wireless would no longer connect. I did my KDE4 install again from the start but the second time I encountered this message I rejected the mandi install. My wireless connection worked and still does. What I am asking here is what does the mandi package do and is it required? A bit of extra information - I am running a belkin wireless adapter on my test install. I'm not looking for a solution to this query, just knowledge, although an answer might be useful to someone else.

I think this is what you are talking about here.  Click on "Configure Your Computer" select "Look and Feel" and than "Desktop Effects" and than un-check Enable Desktop Effects

All I know is Mandi is a monitoring daemon which acts as a bridge from root monitoring libraries to user applications.  That is about all I know sorry....

I think this is what you are talking about here.  Click on "Configure Your Computer" select "Look and Feel" and than "Desktop Effects" and than un-check Enable Desktop Effects

YouCanToo, I haven't been able to affect the "icon tips" by changing this option. The best I can do is right click the "Task Manager" and go to "Task Manager Settings" and unchecked the "Show Tooltips" option. BUT, That only stops the tips for the running apps. I still don't know a way to stop the "Tips" from showing up on mouse-over for the widgets that have been added.

Just a guess, but...

The text comes from the Name, GenericName, and/or Comment lines of the desktop file for those icons.  If you create copies of those desktop files that you have added to your panel, and the blank out that data, and use the new ones to replace the current ones on your panel, perhaps KDE wont display the mouseover bubble

..like I said, just a guess though.

Since not installing Mandi doesn't seem to effect my system I guess it's not important although your information is useful.

If I understand it correctly, mandi is only needed for the "interactive firewall" feature..  it is used to monitor shorewall and send notifications of activity to monitoring programs..  mainly the network monitor in the taskbar.

Mandi is described in synaptic as a "Monitoring daemon bridge".. there is also a package named mandi-ifw (interactive firewall); together they add rules to the shorewall firewall that cause mandi to send notifications to any listenting applications (the network monitory in the taskbar is the only one that I know of).
