<solved> Konqueror freezing up every time I open it.

Hi All

As the post says - every time I open Konqueror it freezes up. It opens and ten 5-10 seconds later it goes dark grey and stays like that!  If I try to close it I get the "Konqueror isn't working - do you want to force quit" messgae, which I do.

I can't open my home folder to get to my files! Help!!

Any ideas?

NB - running up to date KDE3, updated with the repository that has been fixed to old KDE3

Is your entire system up to date? Have you reloaded in Synaptic, marked all upgrades, apply (twice) and let it do everything? We can't help unless you have done that. Run konqueror in a terminal, as in Konsole type konqueror and hit enter. Now it will give error messages. Post those here. Will konqueror run in root? Log in to root and try it. If it runs there your system is OK. You may have a problem in your home account konqueror config file. You could rename the konquerorrc file in .kde/share/config, with konqueror not running, then run it and let it create a new rc file. If that works you can reconfigure konq as you like.

My system is completely up to date - at least it is using the new fixed KDE 3.5 repository.

I logged on as root, and konqueror worked fine - browsing happily away...  I then tried opening it in a terminal and it opened to the original default homepage. Interestingly, it didn't then freeze up. i could surf the net no problem. However, as soon as I tried to view my home folder, it froze up again!

I renamed the konquerorrc file and started it up again. It froze again!
No idea where to go next!


Edit:  I can open Konqueror AS root when logged on normally and that works fine - so I can browse all my files happily. Why not as a user though?

If you have konqueror preloaded and delete your konquerorrc file, it will probably be regenerated with whatever error has occurred. I would open a terminal, type "su -c 'pkill konqueror'", without the double quotes. This will stop any occurrence of konqueror, even if it was started before you logged in. Then delete the konquerorrc file and try again.

Thanks for the interest. Did EXACTLY  as you suggested..... and got the same problem!

After I tried one more time, checking for typos, I would try creating a new user and then login as the new user and try from there.

Hi there

Your idea for solving this did make a lot of sense, so I did it again and the problem persisted. However, after rebooting (what is this - windows?  ) the problem has gone away! Brilliant stuff, thanks for your help - it really is appreciated.
