Help! Cursor hung up with document? icon

Hi on my other machine the linux cursor has changed into what looks like a document ICON with a cross in the top left hand corner,  the mouse moves but does not respond, I think my shaky fiingers clicked the mouse at some point causing this, how do I get out of it?

I really need some sleep and would really like to shutdown soon - Thanx

Hi microbrain, if you hit the key combination Ctrl+Alt+Backspace it will restart X and you will have the opportunity to either log in or shutdown/restart.
