ATI Mobility Radeon 4650HD Live Cd no boot
« on: January 23, 2010, 10:53:13 AM »
I have a new Dell 1747 laptop that uses an ATI 4650HD Mobility graphics card.

I can not get the PCLINUXOS livecd to boot so that I Can install it on the hard drive.

I have tried all options on boot up but nothing helps.

Most distros that I tried have the same problem.  It gets to the point where X is to start up and then the system freezes.  ( From the Livecd).   A few will actually boot from their livecds.  They must have a driver for this ATI card built in.

I have used PCLINUXOS for the last 3 years on a desktop system with excellent results.

I can not even get to a command line as the Livecd is booting. ( all options tried)

Can anyone help me with this.  I sure woulld like to be able to use PCLINUXOS on my new laptop.

Hi, I'm only a newby, but it sounds live a graphics card driver problem, can you boot in safe mode? If so in terminal type video you may be able to experiment with various options testing them till you find one that works, normally vesa-safemode boots ok when having problems.
Good luck  :)

Thank you for your replies.

I tried entering 'VIDEO' from the command line.
It tries to download a file but gives the following error:
cannot access /usr/lib/libsqlite 3.so.0

The Dell 1747 laptop uses a 1600x900 display which is not a standard size.

I have tried editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
file using nano, and am able to edit the monitor res to 1600x900.
This allows me to get to the Desktop.

However; I cannot run Firefox, or get into Configuration.
They just cannot start.  All other applications I have tries, including games work ok.

I have also tired installing the propietary ATI driver from ATI.
However; I still cannot run Firefox or get in to Configuration.

The media check shows ok and the Livecd works great on other computers.

Hope you can help me with this. ;)

Which version? KDE/Gnome/Xfce/Lxde/E17? Anyway, Pclos 2010 should come out shortly with the latest kernel...

I normally use KDE.  I have also tried the Gnome Community edition with the same results.
