solved - Broken pkgs Postgre -related to Gecko problems?
« on: January 22, 2010, 05:41:29 PM »
Been awhile since upgrading.  Won't go into details why.  Has been more than a month since updating my 2009.2 but I don't think before Thanksgiving.  Figured I would upgrade one last time and tryout the new firefox/tbird I hear so much about before the next Big One.  You know what I mean  ::)

I never changed my KDE to KDE4.  I am on PASS server.  Tried to update this morning and got error that there were broken packages. Thought I would be cute and simply unchecked the offenders.  libpq8.4-5 and libqxx.  I figured apps needing them wouldn't be upgraded, right? Update went okay.  Tbird was the new one and worked (yes, it does suck, will have to look into alternatives since I am a POP3 baby).  Firefox was hosed.  Tried it from commandline, safe mode whatever and it griped about. Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.1.5 and 1.9.1.5.  That sounded suspiciously like my fault for unchecking those nasty postgre whatevs.  But I did go back to synaptic and chose just firefox to upgrade and have it back.  Tbird still sucks so I will probably switch over to seamonkey if I keep this install.

My question, other apps are now griping about Gecko stuff missing: Wine, Amarok - I haven't tried out all my usuals but I bet it is more than that.  Did I hose this install?  Tried synaptic tonight again and those PostGre's are still broken (coming from "extra").  Advice?  should I try and go to KDE4?  Not really keen to but if this breakage is hopeless with the frozen repo or whatever and I have a shot with KDE4, let me know.

Thank you much.

Nish,

If you have KOffice installed, try removing it. It solved the exact same problem of broken packages on my KDE 3.5.10 installation. KOffice has moved on to the KDE4 repos.

Thank you, parnote.  I did finally search using the magic terms yesterday and found there were some threads about it.  I removed koffice and was able to update.  Will miss kexi but that was all I was using from there.

We sound so similar ... I only wanted KOffice to have access to Krita. But as infrequently as I used it, I can do without it.
