Firefox & Thunderbird Update?
« on: January 22, 2010, 02:55:26 PM »
I saw the message on Twitter that the Firefox & Thunderbird updates have been packaged for the 2010 release. Does that mean I have to wait for the 2010 release to get them? I checked Synaptic, but it's not there yet.... I'm confused :P

Basically yes - I guess you saw this from Tex:

2010 final will be out shortly after KDE 4.4 is released. There will be some beta's before final.

You can always install Firefox 3.5.6 3.6 locally to test it. Just download the Linux version to a folder in your home account and extract the contents from the tar.bz2 file (right-click on the file in Dolphin/Konqueror and extract from there). The firefox executable is in the firefox folder. As far as I can see there's no problem with the existing profile from the current version.

But otherwise it's patience all the way (it's hard for lots of us!).

Umm.... we already have 3.5.6, totally missed 3.5.7, & now 3.6 is out.

Oops, made a boo-boo. At least I updated my post  ;) .

Of course it's 3.6, not 3.5.6  ::)

So let me get this straight.... I have to wait... how much longer?.... for the 2010 release, then download/burn the iso, & spend hours setting up my desktop, settings, & programs to my liking all over again, just to get Firefox & Thunderbird updated? I thought by keeping up to date via Synaptic on my current installation, I wouldn't have to go through all that trouble? I thought PCLOS was a "rolling release" distro? I'd rather not download the tarballs for Firefox & Thunderbird, since that's not a true installation & I'd have to redirect my shortcut to the extracted folder.

It is a rolling release...you won't have to download/burn the ISO...just update from Synaptic when available.

KDE 3 is the default at the moment, KDE 4 has been available for testing though for quite a while now. Once 2010 is ready the repos will be updated and as I understand it, KDE4 will then be the default for the new release as 3.5 is no longer supported.

2010 is still being worked on and isn't ready yet.

You specifically have to add KDE4 in synaptic.  There have been posts already telling one how to do this and how to upgrade from kde3 to kde4

For PCLinuxOS 2009.2 KDE3 is official, though one can choose to install and run KDE4. It appears that KDE4 will be the king in PCLinuxOS2010 whenever that release becomes final.

Nope, the 2010 release is gonna have to be fully reinstalled.

CheeseQueen452:

It just has to be done as so much stuff is being overhauled not for the sake of KDE4's "glam". But because KDE3 is DONE...Its gone! Kaputs! Finito'!

Probably not the best and most friendly way to put that. But, its a painful fact most of us avid KDE3 lovers gotta face. But back to the point. Think of it as like being on Windows. In a sense it too is a "rolling release" type of setup. But after so much time and so many advancements to code & tech. Even you gotta ask yourself: Is there any point remaining on Win98SE(no offense to those that still use & love that OS*)? When theres so many more advancements, fixed invulnerabilities and much needed stability in WinXP.

Its just that alot of these advancements must have a "fresh" new core to kick things off with. And Im very sure Tex and the gang really tried avoiding this scenario. Trust me, I know the pains of having to restart things over and over again. Especially having to hunt down certain things that were hard to find at 1st. But if you take certain precautions and backup the things that can be backed up. The transition usually goes pretty painless.

...OR

You can just do as Tex advised 1 other person. "Just dont update". If things are where you want/need them. Just dont do it. If Im not mistaken. I think theres a few members on here looking to keep KDE3 going a bit longer. So, if you choose to stay where you're at. Search the forums for their info. Maybe that'll work out for you.

Regarding KDE3 -> KDE4 I think what some of us have in mind is not Win98 -> Win2K analogy but more of a WinXP -> Vista ...
Microsoft did have the sense to let its users stick with WinXP until the dud got flushed out...
