trying to update an old install
« on: January 21, 2010, 11:54:54 AM »
I am trying to update a friends computer. I can't get X to start. Using the LiveCD only worked when I put it in safeMODE vesa. Booting to the hard drive install with correct monitor settings only gets me to a text console and startx fails.

This box has not been updated for several months pre KDE4.

running apt-get update at the CLI works but apt-get dist-upgrade fails.

I get the error message:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  kdelibs4: Obsoletes: kdelibs (< 4.3.4)
  libpostproc51: Obsoletes: libffmpeg51
  x264: Obsoletes: libx264_60
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

I manually changed the source.list file from kde to kde4 thinking it might solve the problem but got the same error as above.

I could use some help to figure this out. This is not my computer and my friend needs it back asap. Now I have to go to work in 3 hours, I was supposed to be off.

YouCanToo set up a static KDE 3.5 repo. See his post:   http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,65202.0.html

I have a static repo on my network. I don't think that will solve my problem. I am running kde 4.3.4. The error I posted earlier was before (and the same after) changing the source.list to look at the kde4 directory and not the kde directory. My repo looks at Main, Extra, kde4 and nonfree and nothing else. I don't have a problem with my boxes becasue I keep them current. I was letting her computer look at one of the repo servers that every one can pull from.

stealth,

It is a bit unclear what you've actually done.

If you are trying to upgrade a KDE4 system you shouldn't to begin with have had the kde section active in /etc/apt/sources.list (or in Synaptic, for that matter). After first trying to update from the wrong section you can't just change kde to kde4 and expect apt-get dist-upgrade to fix everything.

What happens if you reinstall task-kde4?

It's still not clear. Looking at your previous posts it actually looks as if you tried to dist-upgrade a KDE3 system after activating the kde4 section in the repo. That would be a very bad idea so you probably didn't. Most likely you installed task-kde4 in between.

But if so, you didn't tell us. In fact, you haven't told us very much at all. And nobody can try to diagnose your problem unless you tell us everything that you've done.

(And, looking at the error message in your first post: kdelibs is in the kde section while kdelibs4 is in the kde4 section. The other dependency errors are more complicated.)

"It's still not clear."

no, it's clear, he is trying to update a updated distro with kde4.3.4 with a kde3 frozen repo, it is perfectly clear for me  ::)

Strange,... I read it as trying to update a 4 month old 3.5 to the latest 3.5 with a 4.3.4 repo.

Ok, I will try again. I have a non-up-to-date system with kde 3.5.10. The box would not boot at all. I got a call. I picked up the box. It would boot to a text screen no GUI. I ran apt-get update with original sections main, extra, kde and nonfree. That was when I got the error as originally posted after running apt-get dist-upgrade. I was going to try to make the install up-to-date as far as kde3.5.10. I got the X problem resolved. Presently box is running booting to kde 3.5.10. I have to wait until I have access to box to check anything.

stealth,  yeah, I kinda thought you were just trying to get your friend's 3.5 back up to snuff.  That's why I suggested using YouCanToo's "frozen" repository.  In the following he points that the public repositories are being updated to accommodate the newer QT libraries thus breaking the 3.5 install. This may not have caused your friends problem, but updating from them may have complicated your fix.

YouCanToo wrote, "At the beginning of the month I made a duplicate (snapshot) of the repository at pclosusers.com.  I have froze it so it can no longer be updated. I done this so those that plan on staying with KDE35 use it without breaking their systems as the main repositories keep updating with KDE4 and the newer QT libraries.  Please note that there will no longer be updates to this repository.  The following is the line that you will need to add to your sources.list to use this repository

rpm http://kde3.pclosusers.com/pclosfiles/ pclinuxos/2007 main extra nonfree kde gnome

Please note that this is only for those that are planning on staying with the KDE3.5 Desktop.  Note that this is an unofficial repository, and you are using it at your own risk! Please do not ask for help on the forum if you decide to use this repository."

Sounds like you have made some progress though....  good luck,
