Make LiveUSB doesn't make live USB
« on: January 19, 2010, 09:44:06 AM »
Let me explain.

Start with a clean Minime 2009 install on a Dell Mini9 netbook. Do all updates. Upgrade kernel to 2.6.27. Install KDE4.
Next make an iso using remasterme from a terminal as root.
Insert USB drive.
When that's done, click on System -> Make LiveUSB in the menu.
Click continue
Select your USB device
In the dialog, click Root then root to find the iso.
Click on the iso
Click OK
I choose to cancel in the next window
Small window opens with text "copying vmlinuz"
After a couple of minutes, a window opens stating the liveusb was successful
Click OK
Small window with text "copying vmlinuz" is still there.
Click close
Check USB device - empty.
Didn't see any activity light while liveusb was running.
Try again with different USB device.
No luck.
Run liveusb as root in terminal.
Same result with this message "Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0""

This message is really starting to bother me. It is showing up in a lot of places on all my computers running PCLinux and stopping me from doing a lot of tasks. Even trying to install a program in wine fails with this error. Is there no fix?

At any rate, I'm giving up on live USB.
I have an IDE to USB adapter and a DVD burner in a desktop. I'll pull the DVD burner and hook it up to the netbook and try make livecd.

Running Makelivecd from console as root says something went wrong and gives this message "Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0""

It doesn't really matter. The netbook doesn't recognize the DVD burner. My other two computers do but the Dell Mini9 doesn't.

I give up.

Bro, you are running kde's mklive usb. I found out there are two of them, and both of them have the same problem.
Your error message "Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0"
is not known to me. (try a clean install if you are not bothered to clean up).

But the problem remains the same to me also. There is a "lost+found" folder but nothing in the USB.

MODS, if we report this problem as a bug will it be solved? I did it manually (copied individually from the temp folder to the usb- eventhough it said it is cleaned it is still there and no sqfs file is copied, and all finishes in just 3 minutes), and at the boot screen i get "Grub error 18", which i don't know if it is cause of the pc bios or the setting in the grub. If somebody finds a solution, please tell us.

Thanks all.

Cant help with the USB bit I'm afraid, but I don't think the error message is anything to worry about.

See

or
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,67512.msg550100/topicseen.html#msg550100
Is that the same error?

PS - I see it as well.

Rick,

Follow JohnBoy's advice on the link he provided.

When I was having trouble creating the usb, I did what he instructed and have a live usb with persistence.
Good Luck.

It is not possible to run as a live USB with the kernels released after the last ISOs of PCLOS, such as  2.6.27.31.tex5

I am hopeful that the newer kernel with 2010 ISO will again allow us to use flash sticks to boot the PCs.

Has anyone been able to easily make LiveUSBs with the newly uploaded PCLOS KDE final? My only success so far has been using my AntiX 8.5 laptop with Unetbootin to transfer the 2010 Final to my USB stick (the Win32 version doesn't work for me).

I guess I'm really asking if there is a tool within PCLOS KDE Final that simplifies LiveUSB creation??

Yes I am using 2010 Final on USB flash stick.
So yes it works.
I installed to HDD from the live stick.

I use a manual method to create the bootable stick ....  whether you would find it easy or not I cannot say, but here is the link ...

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,62202.0.html

At present persistence is not working, so you cannot update the stick. It is being worked on I believe.

regards.

Hi JohnBoy,

Yes, I saw the post you are referencing. I was looking for a more automated USB transfer method. I guess I'll just stick with my AntiX/Unetbootin technique for now to make the bootable PCLOS usb.

Thanks,

Ant

Just a quick update: I tested the new version of Unetbootin (v.4.29) and I was successfull in making a PCLinuxOS 2010 usb stick in both Windows7 and Mepis8.5. Good times indeed.

It's in our repo, and works fine off a usb stick and portable usb hard drive. The website has a nice tutorial if needed.
