Multi-core Processors
« on: January 19, 2010, 12:52:33 AM »
Hi To All,
I have 2 * single core processors  1 with 2GB ram 1 with 1 GB ram both 400
1 * 2 core processor with 8GB ram 1066
2 * 3 core processors both with 2 GB ram 1066
& 1 * 4 core (Intel) processor with 4GB ram.800
My point is... why does both PCLinuxOS 2010 and Mandriva 2010
behave so differently on each processor. I mean by this that the same programs may or may not work!!
If a program works it may may or may not work properly, in particular Firefox but also kuickshow
It does seem to be related to the no. of processors but something that works on 4 does not work as well on 3 processors.
Evon on the single processor machines some sites the render on multicore machines do not do so on the single core.
Even if a removal in Synaptic + reboot plus reinstall does not cure the problem.
as usual, your thoughts are greatfully received.

6 machines, each one using the same repos?

all of them with the same kernel?

afik, you are the first person saying that some apps won't run on some multicore machines but if not, lets hope that other users come and share their problems

Hi T6,
Yes It is a problem!
On the 3 core machine at this time as the 4 core machine will not run Firefox.
This machine however will not run superuser Terminal, indeed only xterm will run.
The 2 core machine has some problems running Mandriva 2010 but the are similar to PCLinuxOS 2010
The interesting thing is...all worked under 2009.2 kde3

My then new SATA HDD was formatted and used with PCLos 2007 on AMD Duron 900 with 512 M memory and MX440 nVidia. (M$ on the first IDE HDD, data on seccond IDE)
Software update every week.
The Machine is in 2008 updated with another mobo AMD Athlon XP 2400 1G memory.
Same kind of chipset, no update problems ;)
Software update every week.
November 2009 jumped into KDE4...........
December 2009 I got myself another, new this time, powersupply, mobo with Intell Q6600 Quadcore, 2G memory and new(er) nVidia 8400.
The other hardware icluding HDD(s) is the same as in 2007.
PCLos working in 5 minutes, M$ repair 10 hours.
Updated to the latest kernel, nVidia driver and KDE4 included testing from synaptic.
No problems uing this quadcore......

Well, after more updates the device probe, The little icon with the usb symbol, doesnt wok any more. At least detecting a cdrom, it opens but I cannot do anything with it.
Having said that, of course, Firefox in Mandrive 2010  Does nothing having opened 'bigpond.com'  but so does Opera!!! This is on an Intel 4 core system.
There have been no problems, so far, on single processors. This is coming from a 3 core system. Terminals seem to work ok, but why should I so many problems?
There does seem to be a problem with multi-core systems.
I installed PCLinuxOS on my, returned from service, laptop. The Acer dual core Athlon. 2009.2 works fine, but on upgrading to 2010 it became unsable, most operation ended with the crash handler popping up. I am, at this moment trying 64 bit Mandriva 2010 on it. It does seem to working, but until I can access the internet and do mre things, I will not know for sure!
I PCLOS but why is it Bl****** not working for me any more?.
I have re-installed so many times...

Well!!!!!!
I think I have now solved the problem.
One of the usb hubs has been playing up.
It mostly works, but then it locks the system, keyboard and mouse dissapear.
Since this hub is shared by all systems, perhapse this is where all my problems have come from. Except, of course, my laptop.

not common but not impossible
