Need little help with kde4 (Solved /Work-Around)
« on: January 19, 2010, 12:51:09 AM »
I installed Kde 4 on my system about 2 weeks ago and really prefer 3.5.. Anyway moving along,, what i want is my system to be as zippy as it was when i had 3.5 also i have problems viewing youtube video, they are choppy. First i have to tell ya i have disable desktop effects that help a little with the sluggishness of it. But it stills feels alot slower. As for the videos who knows whats the problem there,,
I have a Pentuim duel Core 2.8ghz with 2 gigs of ram...
any info would be greatly appreciated..

I had the same problem after upgrading to KDE4. I think something in the upgrade changed the way my processors were detected. This thread is about how to find out what speed in MHZ your processors are running.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,67093.0.html

I have 2 2.8GHZ processors that were showing a speed of only 333MHZ. I finally decided to reformat and do a clean install of 2009.2 and now everything is detected correctly. I'm waiting for the 2010 ISO to be released before I attempt to use KDE4.

Thanks guys for the reply, Gandy you are right it's reading my CPU's are 700Mhz  that's way wrong.. is there a way to fix this without having to format and reinstall?

i don't understand this

why the desktop changes the cpu stepping?  it is the kernel or a specific app that can do this

why my system is not experiencing this?  i'm on a via/amd system with ati video card

Yeah i know T6 but this started happening after i installed kde4 in 3.5 it read it at 2.8ghz.  During the update was there a kernel change? because his is freaky

It seems that only a few people had this problem. If there is a fix, I never found it.

Edit:
I'm hoping the new ISO runs better. I tried the LiveCD of Mandriva with KDE4 and everything was very fast. The processors were detected properly. I don't want to use Mandriva though.

no, there is only 2.6.27.31tex5, the latest available on synaptic

anything else is on testing and you need to select it to install it, also the older kernel is not removed unless you select it to do this in synaptic

i don't know if the update app(can't remember the name) does this

Well i think i found a work around the problem. I believe the problem is in the kernel i blacklisted p4_clockmod and now my pc is reading at the correct speed. I believe there is a kernel patch for this but the work around fits also... So far i'm not claiming this as solved until i put it through it's paces...

Me too (me neither  ;D). Only noticed that my CPU runs at 1.6 GHz always but on my installed PCLOS KDE 3.5 only 800MHz when the system is calm and thus everything seems run faster on Mandriva.  :)
But probably the newer kernel is a big plus. Ext4 also adds some speedup.

So the new PCLinuxOS 2010 will be definitely faster. ;D ;D ;D
