PCLinuxOS decides to not shutdown sometimes
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:20:49 AM »
I just recently noticed that PCLinuxOS does not shutdown like 1 out of 10 times I shutdown or reboot. It will just go to a black screen with a dotted _ thing at the top left corner and stay that way until I hold the power button down to shut it off. But most of the time it shuts down correctly. But that little thing left my PC on for a whole day after I checked the weather in the morning and came back to find my computer still on with that black screen thing. It might of been because I updated PCLinuxOS. Is there a fix for it?

It's possible Firefox is not properly closed.
Install gtk-oxigen-molecule, this removes the responsible gtk-qt-engine. (if installed)

I don't think that is the cause. If I keep restarting the computer it will eventually decide not to shut down.

After reading all the post on this subject, It looks like a failed HDD.
If you removed the HDD and booted a live CD and it worked fine, then the hdd is the problem!
I have seen hard drives fry a whole system because of a short in the hdd.
An other way to test this is to remove all other devices...cd roms and floppy drive and usb devices
from the PC and just plugin the hdd. Just the keyboard, power on and see if it will boot!
An other cause is a failing power supply...low voltage! If you have a volt meter...remove all power from devices and measure the voltage from
the yellow..12+, red..5+, orange..3.3+. 12v line is 10% + or - 5v 5% + or -.
I don't believe this is software related!

I believe this is software related because it only happens with PCLinuxOS, and no other Distro or Windows.

Open a terminal window and issue the "halt" command and if you get any error messages please post them.
