Testing Kernels-observations.
« on: January 17, 2010, 11:42:42 AM »
Tried 2 kernels in 'Testing'.

On  Fri Jan  8 15:15:56 2010 Installed the following packages:
kernel-2.6.32.2-pclos5 (1-1pclos2010)
kernel-firmware (20090604-1pclos2010)
8packages were removed during this process.

But with this kernel
1]the boot process was in text mode at @ 800X600,not at 1440X900 which is my native res.
2] could not log in into KDE 4.3.4 desktop when booted for second time.Rebooted 3-4 times  but there was no progress for 5-10 min after appearance of 1st icon of hard disk at the kde splash screen which is prior to log in screen.

Commit Log for Fri Jan  8 18:08:35 2010
Installed the following packages:
kernel-2.6.31.9-pclos3 (1-1pclos2010)

With this, besides having text mode boot as above, the xserver too could not start & so there was no  progress up to 'log in' screen.

Posting this got delayed because I think compressed files created by 'hwinfo' are not allowed as attachment,so how to submit it in detail?

Any how....my HW specs are

Intel cor 2 duo i6300     1.86 GHz processor,
D946GZIS intel motherboard with IGMA 3000,
2X2 GB DDR2, 667 M Hz,
2X160 GB  Weston Digital sata
Samsung  SynkMaster 940BW  19" widescreen LCD.

On the same day I have removed these two kernels as this is my main  PC,not a testing unit ,but posted this just to give a feed back to scrutinize the problem.....and to get new PCLOS 2010 KDE soon!!!!! ;)

Best luck for Tex and the hard working team!

Jag:

When you install a new kernel all the dkms drivers need to be rebuilt for that kernel. Did you have dkms set to run on boot?

I'm running kernel-2.6.32.2-pclos5 with an nvidia graphics card and once the driver built have had no further trouble.

Just wondering if you have am-utils installed.  If you do, try removing it and see if the new kernel stops misbehaving. No promises, but it did the trick for me.

In the Advanced Users Section Texstar did warn the .32 kernel was no good with Intel GPUs and said the .31 was better, but like you I found them both pretty non-functional. I could get it to work by changing to a generic Xorg-produced driver, but I couldn't get 3d and glxgears gave me about a quarter of my current speed.

If I removed all the tweaks from xorg.conf I could sometimes get to a desktop with the Intel driver and even run compositing, but performance was very poor. The tweaks in xorg.conf wouldn't just crash X with the generic driver - they rebooted the machine whenever X was started!

So I think you have shared problems with a lot of Intel chipset users with these kernels. They are supposed to have enhanced support for Intel chips, but Intel don't seem to have written drivers for them.

kjpetrie:

When you installed the kernels did you also install the appropriate kernel-devel-<whatever> packages as well? For whatever reason, they are not automatically added as a dependency, as is the usual case. They need to be installed separately.

Yes I did.

I've been looking at the Intel website and I'm not quite clear on the position regarding the correct drivers. It looks to me as if Intel have handed over driver maintenance for Linux to a consortium including Red hat, Suse and even Linus Torvalds himself.

There seem to be three drivers which can be used with recent Intel GPUs - the Intel i810 driver, which is getting rather old now, and seems to be unmaintained, an open source i810 driver, and the consortium's integrated Intel graphics driver. I've tried all three from the repos. The proprietary driver seems unstable with the new kernels to the point of bringing down the whole system rather than just X, the OS i810 can't handle the 1920 x 1080 resolution, and 3D does not work well, if at all, with the consortium's Intel driver.

However, the driver in the repo is 2.5.0 whereas the latest download on the consortium's website is 2.10.0 for the .33 kernel but with a backport available for .32. There seem to be substantial changes in both driver and kernel with regards to which features of the chips are supported, and I take it the problems result from mismatches between drivers and kernels. As Texstar warned there would be a problem with Intel graphics I presume he is fully aware of all this but wants to finalise the kernel before working on updating the driver to match it.

kjpetrie:

That totally sucks. Over the years I've been using Linux, I've noticed a pattern of problems with drivers for both Via and Intel chipsets, so have stayed away from both in all the boxes I put together. What good does having a faster Intel CPU do, if the integrated graphics don't work properly? At least with a desktop, one can change the graphics card easily, but laptops remain a real problem. :(

I have Intel 965GM graphics. The new kernels work fine with it, except for the bootup screen and I hope Tex gets that straightened out. I just tested another distro livecd, with 2.6.31.x, lxde, and compiz with effects and works like a charm. Hopefully, the correct driver can be selected for other Intel graphics, as well.
