New to PCLinuxOS
« on: January 16, 2010, 09:08:55 PM »
I am a beginner with Linux. Not a complete beginner but a beginner nevertheless.

I have run PCLinuxOS 2009.2, KDE 3 in a multi-boot with Windows XP, for a number of months now - running PCLOS most of the time.

The good news:

The OS is running pretty well. It boots faster then WXP, once booted it's faster than WXP. I love the beautifully clear graphics and fonts, the well-designed icons and the virtual desktops.

I installelled Google Chrome/Chromium from your repository and now I have my Linux and Windows bookmarks synchronized, Very nice!

Now, well not really bad news but frustrations:

There does not seem to be much in the way of documentation.

Videos and other files with sound. I can get the images but absolutely no sound (I do get sound for the same files in WXP, same computer, same sound card). There seem to be a number of media applications there and I am confused which one to use and how. Could this be a driver problem?

I now run KDE 3 can I just upgrade to KDE 4?

I have a multi-function printer, Lexmark X6675. I have not been able to find a Linux driver for it, not even in linuxprinter.org. Could I, perhaps, buy a driver somewhere, some generic driver that drives everything, or am I fantasizing?

How can I get Linux or KDE to list all the equipment it sees?

Thank you for your advice and best regards,

pe1800

Welcome pe1800 if you need help you can post one question for thread in the appropriate area, before that please search, maybe you lack some codecs, those are in synaptic (maybe win-32-codecs-all); the guide to update to KDE4 is here:

I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

pe1800:

If you install the package hardinfo from Synaptic, you will get a tool that shows all your hardware, broken down by groups with full details for each item.

Welcome home pe1800
There is a Lexmark All-In-One driver if you look in PCC (Configure your Computer) under Hardware and Configure Printers. This may work with your printer. At least it is worth trying.

Stickies are those little pieces of tissue paper that gets stuck in your crack when you wipe your hidey hole. Oh wait those are dingle balls.  ;D ;D ;D Stickies are those topics at the top of each forum section with a pin next to them.
