Webcam that works with Linux
« on: January 16, 2010, 04:32:04 PM »
Was looking for a webcam that worked in Linux. I found this one at Best Buy.

Manufacturer:    Creative
Type:               Live Cam  Video IM Ultra
System requirements:   printed on the box => Linux Kernel 2.6

I tested the webcam with Skype and it functions. Have not tested the audio portion yet on Skype because I have not been able to get any of my contacts online at the same time. ( I have a small contact list )

This camera does not work on GMail because Google does not support Linux video yet. ( will email them and complain about that ) If you check the Chat settings in GMail, you'll see that video for this operating system ( Linux ) is not supported.

I hope this helps anyone who is looking for a webcam that works with PCLOS and Linux OS.

I attached a jpg file to this post with a picture of the webcam.

discovered that this webcam now works with google chat. you have to look in your software management packager ( e.g. Synaptic ) and do a search on google. you will find a package called " google-talkplugin. once you have installed this, reboot your pc / laptop. then log into google and click on the settings link. in the settings window you can configure your webcam for the video and sound. finally works in google. it's about time.
