lost sound (again)
« on: January 14, 2010, 09:28:18 AM »
Hi

The other day not only did I lose sound but I alsa could not reconfigre the sound via kcontrol as the left hand side menu was empty.  Despite following the instructions given on this site to regain the icons in kcontrol - delete .config - I was forced to delete the whole kde directory in the home folder.  That got the icons back but the sound was still borked.

What is so confusing for pclinuxos is that there are two sound devices.  And kde picks the wrong device as the default sound device.  And despite doing a alsaconf as root and the situation righting itself it is not permanent.

I am writing this via epithany in debian.  debian also had a problem with the devices but there was a permanent fix and that was to add the two sound devices to alsa-base in the order you wanted them.  Tried the same in pclinuxos but it just confused poor old pclinuxos - there was no sound at all not even in alsa-mixer.

So what is up with the sound? ???

A  couple of questions, what version of PCLOS are you using? Did this happen when you upgraded your system?

In PCC - Hardware  the two sound cards should be listed.

There is a config option in bottom right pane and in there you can set the priority of the cards ....

this is where I get hazy ...... I think zero ( 0 ) in the 'index' option for the first and digit one in the index for the second ........ but I am not certain about those so please check ....... there should be a thread or two on the subject in the forum .......

One time I lost sound too but I found it hiding in the speakers volume control.  :D

Maybe this post will help you. It helped me when I installed a video card that had a sound chip on the card and PCC showed two sound cards.

Hi all

Thanks for your suggestions.  I think I have kind of solved it myself.

After doing 'alsaconf' as root, within the 'alsamixer' window I hit f6.  This allowed the option of choosing the default/prefered sound device.  After this I did a 'alsactl store'.  Hopefully this will permanently fix the problem - at least until another update.  ;D
