MLB Sites
« on: January 13, 2010, 11:05:46 AM »
Hello I am new but not in age (see user name).
My problem is maybe nothing to do with PCLinux but with Firefox. Anyway I am a Baseball fan and when I go to the Dodgers site it will load up just fine. But if I try to click on anything else on their site the browser shuts down right away.
Don't know if anyone else has had this problem or it it just me. (Senior stupidty)
 Thanks for your time

First of all, welcome to PCLinuxOS, bornin39! I'm sure we'll get your problem sorted out, so stick around and just wait and see what great, friendly people are here.

Usually I'd say, "Please ask your question in the appropriate section", but I'll try to help out right away.

You mentioned you're new, but I'm thinking you've been running PCLOS for some time now, am I correct?

If true, then maybe you can test this by closing down Firefox, starting up your file manager (Konqueror or Dolphin in KDE) and activating "View Hidden Files". Then you'll see in your home directory the folder .mozilla.

Just as a test - rename it (right-click and select "Rename") to something else, like .mozilla.orig and start Firefox. You'll have the default settings now. Check out the Dodgers site and see if it works.

If it does work and it's not too much of a hassle, you could customize Firefox to be just as before. You can import your bookmarks from the renamed folder and do the other adjustments and should have a fresh environment for Firefox.

If, on the other hand, it does crash again, I think some other experts will have to chime in. Close Firefox, delete the newly created foldr .mozilla and rename your original folder (.mozilla.orig?) back to .mozilla so you have your original setup.

Otherwise - stick around and have fun!  :D

Another option would be to enter

firefox -ProfileManager

from the Run Command (Main Menu > Run Command)

this would allow you to create a fresh profile - no addons enabled etc - and see if you have any joy with that

Yes for almost 24 hours now, I just installed it yesterday (01-12-2010)
I have always used Windows but believe me I am no expert by no means, did not get my first computer until I was almost 60.
Thanks for the information and I will try your suggestion.

Well after finally getting to where I could rename and trying what you suggested _ it crashed again right away.
As for the other reply I am not sure how to get to the command.
AS I am VERY new to Firefox and Linux.

Sorry to be a pest so if you want you can delete this post  with problem. I am sorry also if I posted in the wrorg area.

bornin39, you're not being a pest!  :D

You can open a terminal (or shell) by clicking the menu button, then System => Terminals => Konsole. This is where you can watch the messages that result from calling Firefox (as in this case). Somewhat comparable to a DOS box in WIndows. You can also achieve this by clicking <alt><f2> and typing konsole and <enter>.

So just open a terminal with one of the methods mentioned above and create a new profile with the command menotu described (firefox -ProfileManager) and tell us what happens. If you get any output in the Konsole window you can copy that and paste it in your response.

Fingers crossed...

If you feel uncomfortable (sic) using the Konsole and the Command Line try this:

Click on the Main Menu button (what would be the START BUTTON in Windows)

You should then see an menu item named Run Command - click on that and type (or copy/paste in) the words

firefox -ProfileManager

Note - type in as written 'less it won't work.

Good luck
