I remember when great care was taken so the the kernel and drivers would fit on a single floppy... 1.4 MB. Today's newly added kernel is 2.0 MB, and the initrd image another 6.5 MB.

The Debian community still maintains a 5 floppies install mode. I tried once, for fun... it's not like when people had only this method available, it's...  kind of exotic. ^^

Joble, I am just about to start trying to dualboot my NB305 with the latest PCLINUX.

Do you have a recommendation on KDE vs LXDE?

And is there some special desktop configuration you use to suit the small screen?

thanks

You sorry sap.  Xfce!  I'm all about Xfce!  If you knew me you would know that!

(Just kidding)  I use kde and I have task-xfce, task-enlightenment, and task-lxde installed on it too.  Install kde. works like a champ.  I did up the ram to 2G but so far haven't used much over 512 that I know of.  You're good, just do it.  It Rocks on this little toshiba netbook.

I wouldn't recommend lxde actually.  No reason for that, except that, you know, Neal maintains that.  HUGS Neal!  ROFL!

Ok, all kidding aside.  KDE.  One thing I have noticed is that I have to play with the touchpad as it loads.  If I don't I don't get page scrolling on the right hand side.  Also not sure my mike works for skype, though I have updated the kernel, I have not tested that.  Last time I played with the Netbook workspace, it crashed contantly, have not played with it recently though.

I think that's about it.  Install KDE.  That is my recommendation for this netbook.  It works, its what I use.

I know I messed with you a bit.  Just in fun.  I hope Neal reads it.   ;D

i found very funny that you got that netbook but you discovered that it didn't had a cdrom drive  ;D

my wireless on this nb255 is not working well, it finds too many networks with the same name, no idea what that means, since i don't have passwords for those networks i can't test them  :-\

Hi,

I would recommand you try all versions of the collection. This way, you will know what you really like most ! The matter of feeling there is very personal... and the way it reacts in on given machine has also to do with the way one uses it : if you use on app at a time, or 3 or 4 greedy ones at same time... (ie: Gimp + OpenOffice Impress because you create a presentation, plus a greedy music collection manager to listen to your favorite songs while working, + Firefox with several tabs because you need infos on OOo and Gimp tricks on the tutorials and forums... )

:)
