I just bought this.  Will probably dual boot till I get linux figured out as it has skype and I've never used it before, looking forward to it.  Anyway, I will keep you updated on my efforts to get it working with PCLinuxOS.  Davecs, expect me to contact you if I run into any problems.  I will give it a good try this weekend.

Edit:
The speakers aren't loud enough, I'll probably have to use headphones with it, specially at public hot spots.  Other than that, it's a nice new toy.  Next project, get skype working with video in PCLOS!

Update:
Packaging Live-USB (Minime KDE4) booted up just fine but no wireless.  Back to the beginning.  Fun Stuff!

Bummer, this thing did not come with a CD so it looks like I gotta buy an external drive and make a system rescue cd so I can get back to factory defaults if I screw it up.  Slight delay in getting Linux installed.

Yep, it does boot Linux from usb, but so far, no wireless, webcam or microphone, not that I have tried very hard yet.

Sound may be a problem simply because the wrong mic is selected. These machines often have a built in mic "front mic" and a mic socket "mic". You often find that the default KDE setup picks the wrong one.

You need to go into PCC to tell us about the wireless and webcam hardware. Might be a job for ndiswrapper. If it's atheros but madwifi doesn't help, you'll probably find it easier if you wait until the next ISO, there might have been some more progress with certain webcam drivers by then as well.

you can (or you should) make a rescue  usb (over 4 gb) .
no need for an external drive...
my wife has got one of those... running the win7 thing with  virtualbox... running a different linux flavour .... cam works... haven't tryed wifi...

Yes!  MBR was written, video works!  I have a lot to do yet to get this netbook fully functional but the public beta is freaking awesome, and FAST!  Thanks Tex!

Sound works. Was turned all the way down.  DOH!
Video problem seems to have worked itself out??  I did notice the boot section was set to 1024x768 while my netbook is 1024x600.  Changed that and so far no lockups at boot time.
Way Happy!  camera/mic and keyboard tests yet to do.


Edit:  OK, skype static works.  I didn't have to go to options/audio and lock it up.  So, most of my keyboard shortcuts work, wireless works out of the box, microphone, headphones and webcam work out of the box and screen brightness yet to work on, but I can live with that, checking what Davecs has posted.  Next Beta get the entire hard drive, good by Win7!
PCLinuxOS 2010 is going to be great for Netbooks!

Now I gotta figure out how to add this little beast of a computer to the hardware database.

I can, with confidence, declare this netbook on the high end of acceptable with PCLOS 2010 beta1.  Most of the Fn keys work as well as all the hardware I've tested so far.

Not tested:
HD vibration sensor.  (I'm not going to intentionally shake the computer up to see if the heads parked)
USB Recharge Port.  (Got nothing to test it with)
Ethernet                 (Ditto)
Bluetooth                (Ditto Again)

Suspend to ram works, haven't test hibernate yet.

No complaints.  Even got Live-USB with persistence going on it just today.    Only thing is mic in skype, but it did work once and I haven't worked at all yet to get it working.

Suspend to Ram works but I have not tested suspend to disk yet.

I am very happy with it so far.

My son received a Samsung with processor N450 for his birthday. I comes with Seven installed, and I had the same thought : but no way I would by an external cd/dvd reader/burner ! Well, I went to a Windows chan to ask for advise, and there, most of the people were Linux dual-booters.

They advised me to do the backup with Clonezilla. I installed the live Clonezilla on the usb key, and did a full dump through ssh to my Desktop computer.

I'm not an expert, that was the first time I was using it, so I read carefully what was on the screen, and figured out that I'd better do a full hard drive image, and not partition by partition. Then the full dump was allright, with several files and directories in a directory named "win7-xxx-long-name-xxx.img".

In the meanwhile, I destroyed Windows boot playing too hard with EasyBCD. /o\

No problem, my son can live without Windows Seven. He only uses Linux distros to play a few games and write a few mails to his Grand-father, the author of the gift. ^^

But if the author of the gift sees one day the machine without win7 !   

I restored the full w7 with Clonezilla. I had to restart several times (there is an option to go back to the beginning in Clonezilla) because I didn't a howto I could understand right away under my eyes. In fact, I had to create a directory named "partimag" just under the /home of the distro where I have the dump, then copy (or move, but I preferred to do a full cp -R there) the dump to this directory, and then Clonezilla did the job. (I had to select the partitions to restore, that was easy)

When finished, all was restored, w7 booted again, but not the distros. I just had to install Grub on the mbr and then all was fine.

Funny how needing to go get a cd drive/usb controller is such a drag to get linux installed.    Still it's better than it used to be. Who remembers copying the floppy images with that awful, buggy copy utililty and then having to fight with X just to get a desktop. And not blow you crt.

Joble, just get your self a cheapy internal drive and a usb - ide controller. It's 2010 for God's sake.        

edit: I realize you've got a usb stick to work. But I still reckon a spare cd/usb combo for my eeepc is a good investment.

I remember when great care was taken so the the kernel and drivers would fit on a single floppy... 1.4 MB. Today's newly added kernel is 2.0 MB, and the initrd image another 6.5 MB.
