X server on lxde live cd won't initialize
« on: January 12, 2010, 02:19:32 PM »
I'm trying lxde live cd on a Toshiba L555D-S7930 laptop. It has an ATI 4100 chipset (Radeon x1300). The LCD default is 1600 x 900 24 bit. I can't change that. The error is "no screens found". I can't get the Xserver to configure to use it, and I've tried several options. I can use fb and vesa, the later gives much better resolution. Is this a case of installing, then having to get the right driver?

You tried to install another video driver while in the livecd?
Why?

No, didn't try that. I've found that isn't reliable, if it works at all. I got this version just to check out how it would work. And because it's a later release the base system is nearer to up to date. I plan to copy my fully upgraded pclos to the new computer from my old one and hope there will be no video problems (the older computer uses ATI 200M, same driver should work). I don't want to do a new install (2009.2) because I'd be in download hell again at this stage. Or else I'd have to wait until a new .iso is released.
