[solved] Synaptic Update: "Resolve generated breaks......"
« on: January 12, 2010, 11:16:42 AM »
I have been out of touch for a few weeks-- however, when I looked for a message from Synaptic Update Notifier this is what I got:
Quote from: Synaptic Update Notifier
"An error occured verifying upgrade, this may be caused by held packages.

Do Not update!

Check Synaptic or try again later"

I then went directly to Synaptic and reloaded the information there, did the "3-step" and when I hit "MARK" I received this message:
Quote from: Synaptic
"Error, PackageProblemResolver: Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages"

I am running 2009.4 and everything was up-to-date about Christmas or New Years.  This situation has existed for the last one or two weeks; I keep waiting for it to resolve itself, but it hasn't yet.

I am using KDE 3.5 on this desktop

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated
katie

rumor has it a "big" update is on its way and the repos is quite in the mean time in anticipation of the update. There are a few packages that are known to be broken and the fix will probably be part of the update.

the error msg you gave is not very informative. If you want to report problems with packages. Open the terminal, log in as root and type the following two commands and report the result of the second one

apt-get update

apt-get dist-upgrade

Wow! That was fast-- ran both commands in terminal (SU) and this what I got back
Thank you for being there
This "Big Update"-- is it rumored to be mandatory change to KDE 4.0?

try to delete those two packages mentioned and see if you can update. Somebody somewhere said removing those packages will remove koffice. If you must have koffice or any other package that will be removed then wait until the error is corrected.

The only packages i have heard are low level packages like latest kernels, X11. They shouldnt have that much of an inpact on desktop environments.

You should know kde3 is no longer supported and you are taking a risk each time you update your system. At some point, you might update, your desktop will break and there will be no support.

yep, removing koffice (and maybe also kdeaddons), or the two packages libpq8.4_5 and libpqxx should do the trick, see here
good luck,
