is your firefox running? better go stop it!
« on: January 11, 2010, 09:25:39 PM »
  ok when thunderbird updated you would close the session and if you wanted to open it again it would give the error thunderbird is still running but not responding you must close the current blah blah blah. i got used to it but now firefox is doing the same thing. does this have anything to do with kde4 (other machines in house running kde3 no problems) or is it the respective software programs? i believe it's kde4 related but don't know for sure and i can't seem to fix it.
  any idea's?

Can't really help wit dat.  I can confirm that I do have kde4 and my firefox and thunderbird do not do that, on my machine.  I have read similar posts on the issue, but I have not had the problem myself.  I know that doesn't help really, but it's not kde4 causing it.   ???

hey Lou, here is a fix. Open synaptic and search for gtk-oxygen-molecule and load it.  When finshed reboot your desktop and those problems should disappear.  It will fix both the issues for you.

no, it is not kde4 or i would have the problem too, i only have firefox and it is not doing what you describe

i don't have the gtk theme mentioned but i have set all my gtk apps to use qtcurve settings from kde4

what you describe could be a addon not responding, a memory leak they call it(very common lately with some addons  :( )

try firefox without any addon to see if you can replicate the situation, then enable some addons to discard suspects

T6 - I agree that it is not kde4 specific, but it has only surfaced after going to the KDE4 desktop, it also effect both Firefox after the latest update and Thunderbird. I have removed all the plug-ins from Firefox and it DOES NOT change the issue.  It does appear that this effect some but not all users. Since I have installed the gtk-oxygen-molecule file the problem has ceased on all the machine I have.  FWIW this fix has been mentioned in several other posts in the forum and even AndrzejL has made a video on You Tube showing the problem before and after the said fix.

Just adding my vote;
gtk-oxygen-molecule - This appears to be an update/substitute/replacement/alternative (choose your own word :) ) for gtk-qt-engine.

I have only seen this Firefox problem running gtk-qt-engine under KDE4, and it always disappears when using gtk-oxygen-molecule.

How could we have known without this thread? I guess "learning the hard way" is the name of the game.

Edit. FYI. I didn't have installed gtk-qt-engine but David's suggested app gtk-oxygen-molecule fixed the anomaly.

will try to remember the fix if i ever have the problem

about the addons, you could just disable them, not necessary to remove them

yes thanks youcantoo it did work. i should have remembered that you had mentioned the fix to me when you were over at the house showing me some of the finer points of kde4 and i first asked about the thunderbird "anomaly". i guess it didn't really hit home until it started doing the same thing in firefox. i guess i could have called you but first instinct was the forum,
        thanks all, loudog
