(SOLVED)Startup/Shutdown Sounds Cut Off
« on: January 10, 2010, 07:48:51 AM »
Since I've upgraded to KDE4, my startup/shutdown sounds get cut off near the end. I've searched the forums, but haven't found anything. Can someone please help?

i can report this same situation, on windows xp

in pclinux, the only idea i can give you is reconfigure your soundcard by using alsaconfig command in konsole or by opening pcc/hardware/sound configuration, if you have multiple options in the driver list, try them and compare results

for some reason kde4 changes audio configuration on some machines and is required to reconfigure it

I tried selecting other drivers, but no dice. I typed "alsaconfig" in konsole, but it said "command not found". Any other ideas?

Same thing happened to me, but in KDE3.5. This was after messing with KDE4 on another partition -- I don't see how that could be related, but that was the sequence. The opening sound is still OK on the KDE4 side. Don't much care about the "problem", but it's weird that all the other sounds I can think of still work just fine.

I just tried the same command, works for me, you are going to need to give more detailed information in your replies than "still no dice" to get the answers ;)

Do you even have "alsaconf" installed?

Yes, it's installed, or else I couldn't run it as I said I did....

Post back the output from Konsole.

It basically said it successfully completed the configuration, & told me to reboot.

Post back the output from Konsole.

FYI.... When I logged in as root to run alsaconfig, the default startup/shutdown sounds played completely. Why are my own sounds being cut off? Can someone please look into this & find a solution?

It happened to me a few weeks ago (no system sounds) and after trying everything I read in forums the easiest (and successful) solution was to make another user, copy all my files there and erase the problem user.

Good luck

Right, exactly what I do also. It seems either the configurations in .xine or possibly .pulse mess up the audio sometimes, especially if they're kept over several upgrades (KDE3 => KDE4?).

But recreating a clean home directory, and also completely cleaning out the /tmp folder, have solved problems for me.

I'd prefer not to make another user account, since everything else seems to be ok. I should delete everything in the tmp folder? Not sure that would help in my case, but I'll try almost anything....

Just to be on the safe side, log off first.

Then switch to a virtual console with <alt><f2>, log in as root, and navigate to /tmp.

Delete all files/folders under /tmp - I use rm -rf .???* (for the dot files) and rm -rf ???* (for the rest).
Note: in case you see a smiley, it's meant to be 3 question marks for both rm commands

Finish off with restarting you X environment: service dm restart and check if your system sounds are now completely played.
