"Haha ....... just keep digging T6 ...."

my own grave?!  :P

"I contacted LG, assuming that I had a bad drive, and I was told that none of their new drives are capable of booting."

a pool of cold water just fall over me!

my external lg dvd burner boots perfectly linux and windows so i don't understand such statement

"Perhaps I should see if there is some upgrade, but those usually come in the form of improved drivers"

the drivers you mention are firmware updates, a upgrade to the internal unit program, the bios of the drive some people call it and it mostly should be run from windows but i downloaded one with the results i mentioned previously

"I suspect that this is the last LG product that I will buy; I am especially annoyed at LG for hiding the fact that their CD/DVD reader/burner cannot be used to boot from a CD. "

could it be that your question was misinterpreted by lg support?  because one of the vital functions of a optical drive is to boot the os that the system will use

i always purchased lg drives and haven't used any other brand and recently worked in new systems with new lg drives without any problem

"The fact that you volunteered to help someone else with their problem absolves you from any guilt associated from too rapid a perusal of their first post."

thank you  :)
