how to edit rmvb files
« on: January 09, 2010, 02:53:38 PM »
recently the rmvb format(real media variable bitrate) has become very popular

most of the content in small file size with good quality has become rmvb in internet, this shouldn't be a problem but it is because this kind of file only works properly in real player and real player is not the ideal app to watch videos

those files work partially in other apps like vlc or kaffeine, sometimes no audio or only part of the audio, lost frames or blurry images

i found some apps in internet doing this task but mostly are those "freeware apps" that doesn't work in wine and doesn't deliver the expected results you need

my question is, what app can convert those files to any other format?

winff, i never could make it work  :(

mencoder, the most prominent app using it is devede, i never imagined this app as a posible solution, just tried a 60 seconds preview and did it well, will try a complette conversion but it takes 40 minutes, will report back

i was expecting a different approach, a video editor but never thought on that one, since vlc and tabencode couldn't convert it properly(or even attempted)

thanks for the idea JohnBoy, will report back with results

after the test, the resulting file is not the same quality as the original one(it should loose some quality but not that much) and has some weird artifacts and blurry images with some stuttering not present in the original file

with this rmvb files if is not one thing is another  :-\

There are not many back ends to call on ...... mencoder, ffmpeg are the two I am most familiar with.
It seems that ffmpeg would have to be compiled with the option when being built whereas mencoder could make use of an external lib .......

That is the way I read what was mentioned in the forum link I posted above.

Maybe something else is needed for mencoder to do this conversion properly?

Have you tried using Avidemux on the file?

avidemux can't handle it, it can't open rm or rmvb files

that is why i wanted to convert them, to edit them in avidemux, cut ports of those chapters

i think that the idea of make a video with variable bitrate with the rm settings seems to be a good idea to deliver the content but not good for anything else
