two issues after update
« on: January 10, 2010, 07:40:24 AM »
I got a PC which is most of the time offline. I had installed the PClinuxOS2009 from disk but not updated it. Recently, I could connect it temporarily to the internet, and I updated all with synaptic.

After the update I got two issues:
1) Control Center doesn't open - it asks for password (if I am not logged in as root) , then I see the splash screen. Then nothing more happen. (The splash screen is there until I kill it)
2) While logging in as root or user "A", the sound works fine, but when logging in as user "B" I got an error at startup:
Quote
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission denied)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
What permission is changed? How do I fix that?

Unfortunately user "B" is the one using this PC the most, and only using it for film and music, so I need a solution!

2. open the terminal and type the following command : "cat /dev/dsp" . What did you get?

A never ending stream of question marks on a dark background that needs to be killed with a Ctrl+C. Maybe you meant "ls -l /dev/dsp"?

[root@fatman ~]# ls -l /dev/dsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 Jan  8 19:10 /dev/dsp

It just looked so odd, I had to try it.  ;D

I saved the output as a text file so I could attach it, but it exceeded the 250 KB attachment limit. ;D ;D

Well, I'd better skip "cat"...  :D
Here is my output:
Quote
[guest@localhost ~]$ ls -l /dev/dsp
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 3 jan 10 15:46 /dev/dsp
and
Quote
[guest@localhost ~]$ stat /dev/dsp
  File: `/dev/dsp'
Size: 0               Blocks: 0          IO Block: 4096   character special file
Device: bh/11d  Inode: 2865        Links: 1     Device type: e,3
Access: (0660/crw-rw----)  Uid: (    0/    root)   Gid: (   81/   audio)
Access: 2010-01-10 15:46:05.292395234 +0100
Modify: 2010-01-10 15:46:05.292395234 +0100
Change: 2010-01-10 15:46:05.292395234 +0100
I tried to change permissions for that file using konqueror as root,  but it seems to set it back to rw-rw---- again at restart. Owner is "root" and group is "Audio". Perhaps the other users are members of "Audio" but not this user? But, as long as I can not start the Control Center it is not so easy for me...

i have seen pcc hanging on splash screen couple of times ..it hasnt bothered me enough to look into it. It does work though from the terminal. When on the terminal, log in as root by typing "su" followed by root' password and then type "pcc" to start it and then add the user to "audio" group in the appropriate section.

pcc behaves exactly the same when I start it from Konsole: No window opens and the splashscreen is stuck. The output generated in the console is:

your issue with pcc is outside the scope of this thread and i think it deserves its own thread.

you can add a user to a group from the terminal with "useradd" command

from the terminal as root, type "useradd -g audio USERNAME"

where USERNAME is the name of the account with problems with sound
