[Solved] Can not play MP3s - LXDE
« on: January 07, 2010, 04:40:18 PM »
After loading some MP3s on my laptop I noticed they wont play. Alsa wont load from either the menu, or when right clicking a MP3 and selecting open w/alsa.

I installed Audacious, along with all codecs via synaptic because I am already familiar with it. Audacious loads, and the title of the MP3 appears, but won't play.

I have searched the forum, and am still searching. Any input would be appreciated. I will probably try another audio program from the repos, but with two already installed, I am thinking it's something else I'm missing.

Do you have the packages libmpg123_0, lame, and libmad0, installed?

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Thanks for the quick reply!!

I had not installed win32 codecs on this machine, but I just did now after reading your reply. Unfortunately no change. Alsa will not load at all. Audacious loads, but won't play the track.

Going for the obvious, have you checked all the settings in kmix, or kaumix, to be sure nothing is muted?

Installed XMMS, and it works great, and brings back memories of my winamp days. Looks like a nice little app, just glad it works.

Thanks for your suggestions, it is appreciated.

... I installed Audacious, along with all codecs via synaptic because I am already familiar with it. Audacious loads, and the title of the MP3 appears, but won't play.

I, too, installed Audacious and got no audio output at first, but unchecking one box in the configuration options, and decreasing the buffer size to minimum, fixed it. My Linux box is disconnected right now, and I am using my Windows XP box to post this, so I am unable to give specifics on what box was unchecked, but it was a box that was checked by default in the basic audio setup section. Decreasing the buffer size cured audio skipping. Audacious now plays mp3 files perfectly. So, no need to uninstall Audacious. Just tweak it and it will respond. I prefer it over XMMS.
