No sound on Acer Ferrari with x86_64 install
« on: May 02, 2013, 09:32:47 AM »
I have tried everything to get the snd_HDA_Audio driver to work with my Acer...  Since the update/install of the 64-bit distro, I have no sound.  The device shows up, the module is loaded and the sound config applet shows it properly configured.  Maybe the surround sound stuff id interfering...
Any ideas?

Here is what I have so far:

[kevin@enzo ~]$ pactl stat
Connection failure: Connection refused
pa_context_connect() failed: Connection refused
[kevin@enzo ~]$ pulseaudio --use-pid-file=false
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup without any loaded modules, refusing to work.
[kevin@enzo ~]$

Loaded modules?  I give up...

As a starter, post the output of following three commands:
Code: [Select]
lspci

Code: [Select]
lspcidrake

Code: [Select]
lsmod

Post them in code tags (as I have done, here).

Well, looks like the snd_hda_intel module is required, and loaded...

Came across this:
Quote
I GOT IT! Thanks to some other threads and looking all over the web, I finally figured it out. There were in fact module options to pass when modprobing. I found the entire list in Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt and just scrolled down to the hda-intel section. There are two options for my laptop (MSI GT735) that seem to work, although they sound a bit different so I am going to continue to play around with them more and will report back what I find.

From here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/audio-problem-with-ati-sbx00-azalia-695713/

Although not specific to 64-bit, it is the same chipset, I believe.  Maybe someone has this audio chipset, as well, and could chime in...?

This looks even more relevant:

I know this is an old post but I think I got the solution for you. I had the same problem on my squeeze and same problem on wheezy. I got this soundcard:

00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA) (rev 40)

I found the solution to this problem a long time ago via some website. Here's what worked for me

# touch /etc/asound.conf
# nano /etc/asound.conf

past the following into the file:
defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.timer.card 1

reboot system and your sound should work. Make sure your master volume and your speaker volume are turned up. Hope it helps you out!

...and, on our own fourms:

Although, I take it AnaheimSam is running the 32-bit PCLOS.  He does, however, have the same Azalia Audio listed...

Re: No sound on Acer Ferrari with x86_64 install Fixed!
I applied this from the LinuxQuestions Forum:

Quote
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig probe_mask=1

in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf on Ubuntu is a good idea. I believe as long as you have it in a .conf file in /etc/modprobe.d/ it will have the same effect. I have the back speakers + the subwoofer working.

However, I don't think any of this fixed it.  After applying the above config file, the speakers still did not work (the headphone jack did), so I went back to KMix and added a "Speaker" channel and maxed the volume.

That was all that was wrong with it (I think!)

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions!

No problem.

If everything is working for you, now, you should go back to your initial post and mark it [SOLVED].
