[SOLVED] e17, Need Help With Audio Players
« on: January 05, 2010, 06:23:54 PM »
I have e17 installed (from synaptic) on my updated (as of 1/4/09) pclos2009/KDE3 system. When I'm in e17, I can access all of my KDE programs...except Amarok. I did manage to 'open' Amarok the first time I tried, but when I closed it and tried to re-open...no dice; clicking the icon in ibar does nothing, run command does nothing, clicking from menu does nothing.

I tried the e17 native "emphasis player" but can't populate it with my music collection, it just says it's not connected to MPD (?). <---(could be a missing dependancy, Music Player Daemon?)

OK, then I remembered exaile, which is much like Amarok but lighter. While still in e17, I fired up synaptic and installed exaile with all dependencies. I clicked exaile from the menu and it opened right up. Yes!! Populated it with my music collection (which resides on it's own partition), added the exaile icon/program to my ibar, and listened to my music for 2 hours before closing it down. Well, before I left e17, I tried to re-open exaile and guess what? It wouldn't open from the ibar, menu, or run command...nothing...nada...zilch. I aso tried from a terminal, and it responded with something to the effect that "Generic Enlightenment Player not available on screen :0" 3 times!

I left e17 and went back to my KDE desktop and exaile played without fail. By this time it was 4am so I shut down the puter and went to bed. This morning I logged into e17 and started exaile from the ibar...it worked! Listened to it for about 10 minutes, minimized to the shelf while surfing firefox. When I clicked to bring it back up on the screen, it just disappeared and I couldn't get it back.

Please, can anyone help? I love e17, but I love my music more. TIA

Hi tuxalish , on E17, the applications that have icon minimize icon close it top the top left, not ever close Amarok or Exaile the button that you would close in Kde, simply because it closes the application you not see it, but still works.
It is also advisable in the configuration of the Amarok or Exaile, uncheck the systray icon for the application.
It is used to. ;)

Greetings:
Agust

PS:I just use XMMS, not use another  :D :D :D.

Hey Tuxalish, If you get the gist of what Agust is saying is that in the other DE's when you quit those two players they stop but are sitting in the system tray ready to be used again. Trying to start a new instance of the app results in failure because it's already there in the tray, click on the icon in the tray and up it pops.

Any player you want to use needs to have the option to quit completely and not go into the system tray, that should be an option in the configuration section of the given app. I think even Rythmbox does this action by default.
Why?

Thank you Agust and Maddog! I do understand. I set Exaile to "show icon in tray" just after installing it. Today, I unchecked it while in KDE, switched over to e17, fired it up, listened to some music, "X'ed" it out at the top of the window, re-opened it several times, and no problemos! Now I know why Amarok won't open in e17, cause I have it set in KDE to sit in the systray. This is what I find puzzling about using two DEs side-by-side. If I change program settings in KDE, those settings will apply to e17 and visa-verse. Anyway, thank you two very much, I'll use Exaile in e17 and Amarok in KDE, and as soon as the e17 remaster is published, I'll install it on it's own partition.  :-* :-*

I'll mark this as solved.

That is the problem of using E17 +  ? , Exaile is a very good choice for E17.

Greetings and enjoy E17PCLinuxOS!!!

Tried it today and is working fine, even with the option in systray included
I think I'll use it instead of amarok or rhythmbox.
