If you don't have any particular reason to use another version of OpenOffice.org you should get it from the repos.

First install the getopenoffice script with Synaptic; then click the K-menu (Start-menu, PC-menu) and go to "Applications"->"System"->"Configuration"-"GetOpenOffice".

Thanks.  Making progress but something wrong.  I get an err (error Message) after each GET N line.   then a timeout before it starts the next Get N line.  It is saying protocol corruption followed by an IP address.   Is there something blocking like a firewall - I am guessing...

Steve,

Don't use the Open Office from the OO site. Blackbird told you how to do it. Use Get Open Office from Synaptic. Do you know how to use Synaptic for installing programs? It connects to the official PCLOS repositories that have packages compiled specifically for PCLOS, so there won't be problems. If you don't know how to use Synaptic please ask and/or search the forums. There's lots of info here.
Using Linux for over 18 years and still counting.

Thanks for the help.  I have read the posted infor but I am stuck.  Loaded Getopenoffice and run.  Starts ok but does not install.  In the dialog box it attempts to Get FTP...... this returns err FTP .....  and then I get protocol corruption (192.87.102.43.21). After a while it times  out and then attempts the next GET FTP.......  At the end it says it is ready use but not there.  I have enough RAM - 2G and 80g hard drive.  Pclinux is installed on hard drive and works .   Any clues   please..

Hi stevewr,
looks like you either use an unreliable repo in Synaptic or maybe you have another problem to connect to the Internet?  Could you please ensure
1) you use only one but a reliable repo in Synaptic:
- Open Synaptic , click on Settings ->  Repositories
- If belnet.be is checked uncheck and select another repository (you could use heanet or pclosusers; please do not use belnet at this time)
- Ensure to have only one repository checked. Then follow these steps to fully update your system. This last step must complete successfully and to be extra sure you could do a reboot afterwards.

2) run: PCmenu -> System -> Configuration -> Get OpenOffice
select your OpenOffice locale and it should work.

If step 2 does not work as expected you may have a corrupted previous installation attempt. To fix that start getopenoffice again and select "Completely remove OO". Then follow step 2 again to install a fresh copy of OpenOffice.

hope this helps, if not make sure to follow point 7 and 8 in the getopenoffice post and provide detailed information here.
good luck,
-p.

Did you do a full update from the repo before you started trying to install openoffice?

Have you updated your install?  There have been several changes to "Get Open Office" since the initial release.

;D  Ok thanks for the help.  i was using belnet.be so changed to heanet and ran the updates.  then I tried to run getopenoffice again.  It initially told me I had two repos so I ran the update again using only belnet checked.  Then ran getopenoffice - this time it took me to the localle selection, unfortunately the same fault occured in the dialog box.  I am assuming that I probably have a corrupt copy of Getopenoffice but cannot get the screen to completely remove as suggested.  I am about to try to run Getopenoffice again - should heanet stay checked when I do this? Keep heanet checked, but -- as pinoc wrote -- uncheck belnet. It isn't up-to-date. Never keep more than one mirror checked and don't let that one be belnet.

stevewr,
in my previous post I mentioned to not use belnet and to use only one (1) repo, right? Please follow these steps and then update your system as explained under step 1. Only after a successful update run getopenoffice, which should be version 1.4. And if you still have a problem then it would be rather helpful to be a bit more specific about the "fault in the dialog box" so I might be able to help you, ok?

OK.   I have carried out step 1 advised by pinoc.  The updates ran ok and I rebooted.  i did get two warnings from package manager. These were Warning :/etc/ld.so.conf created as /etc/ld.so.conf.rpmnew and :/etc/localtime created as /etc/localtime.rpmnew.  I assumed these were not significant and ran Getopenoffice step 2 as advised by pinoc.  I then found the same fault as I had earlier today when running Getopenoffice.  This was
Get 1 ftp://ftp.nl.freebsd.org pclinuxos/2009/openoffice   openoffice.org-ure 1.5.1-9420 [3130kb]
Err ftp://ftp.nl .........as above
Protocol corruption {ip:192.87.102.42 21]
It then timesout and does the same for Get 2 etc.
I  let this run to the end and then tried to run Getopenoffice again but it does not give me the option to completely remove OO. It goes straight to localle option.  Is there another way to remove? The dialog box says Get openoffice 1.4 so I guess it is trying to load the latest version.  I assume i have a currupt version on the PC
Thanks again for the all the help..steve

Hi stevewr,

are you sure you get exactly this error:
Quote
Get 1 http://ftp://ftp.nl.freebsd.org pclinuxos/2009/openoffice
when running getopenoffice? This does not make sense to me because such an address is not specified anywhere in the getopenoffice script.
The URL "http://ftp://ftp.nl.freebsd.org" can not be accessed because it does not exist and the IP you mention is not the one of the server ftp://ftp.nl.freebsd.org.  Your error message looks like a wrongly configured repo in Synaptic. Did you setup any repo manually in Synaptic? This is not needed.

Before we try an alternative solution can you please:
a) open Firefox on your machine and enter the URL: http://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/pub/os/Linux/distr/texstar/openoffice/apt/pclinuxos/2009/RPMS.openoffice/
Does Firefox show you a list of rpms?
b) open the file /etc/apt/sources.list and let me know the content of the single line which does not start with a #
Please only post this line here if you use server other than the PASS server.

we'll get this fixed, trust me  ;)
-p.

Pinoc, Thanks. I am confident that we will get it fixed.  I am wondering whether I should remove everything from the hard drive and start again using your instructions.  Not much on hard drive anyway at this point.  To answer your points

yes  I can confirm the error
Get 1 ftp://ftp.nl.freebsd.org pclinuxos/2009/openoffice
Tried a) open Firefox on your machine and enter the URL: http://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/pub/os/Linux/distr/texstar/openoffice/apt/pclinuxos/2009/RPMS.openoffice/
I can confirm that Firefox shows a list of rpms?
b) Dont understand how to -- "open the file /etc/apt/sources.list" where will I find the file, not on my machine or the in the list of rpms.  Dont know anything about pass server or not.  Sorry.    :-[
