I was able to rip the tracks from a cd with k3b...tried to burn the tracks to a cd (simulation with k3b),it started then it's like it hung for approx 15 minutes...then appeared to start burning the 1st track...hung again & eventually failed with this error:

Using Wodim 1.1.9-Copyright (C) 2006 Cdrkit contributors
Starting TAO simulation at 24x speed...
Starting disc write
cdrecord returned an unknown error (code 255).
If you are running an unpatched cdrecord version...
...and this error also occurs with high quality media...
...and the K3b FAQ does not help you...
...please include the debugging output in your problem report.

This is the debugging output:

This is like the behavior I was getting when I was running the live cd from ram & seems about like what I had from my original install of 2007...

It's supposed to be opening /dev/dvd, not system:/<anything>. Check your video preferences in mplayer.

That's what I thought...actually as far as I can tell there is no such thing as /home/waynk/system...looking in preferences under misc the dvd device is already set to: /dev/dvd & cd-rom device is set to: /dev/cdrom if this is where I should be looking it seems to be right yes ?...

Well, you posted a link to someplace on your computer, so naturally we can't see that. You probably did something similar with the DVD. You have to give correct instructions for the computer to do what you wish.

The link you posted starts with file:///<whatever>, which is not even a correct path on your own machine, yet alone something that can be posted here. You can either upload the image to something like imageshack, then post that link, or attach the screen shot to the forum reply, using the Additional Options... link in the reply box.

In the mean time, open a terminal, with the DVD in the tray, and type;

[polack@fatman ~]$ mplayer dvd://      <Enter>

Post your results.

OK. It started playing. Did it continue to play, until you shut it down, or did it crash?

The controls are visible, from a menu, by right clicking anywhere on the screen. If you want the GUI controls to show, enter;

[polack@fatman ~]$ gmplayer dvd://      <Enter>

You'll also get a warning box, about MV not available. (MV is Motion Vectors) Just click the OK button and ignore the warning; it's harmless.

If the movie opens full screen, move your cursor to the bottom of the screen to see the GUI controls. They should pop up as a semi-half-moon GUI. When the cursor is moved up, the controls will move off screen.

The point is that mplayer does work, and will play the DVD movie, when called correctly. How did you try to play the DVD with mplayer when you got the original error?

yea I knew about the right click menu & the cursor at bottom of screen, but those didn't work when I started from the terminal... earlier I started by clicking 'play dvd with mplayer' from the storage media applet in the toolbar...that brings up the GUI... then click 'play dvd' from the right click menu...

trying 'gmplayer dvd://'

ok...when It opens it brings up the GUI with the error window as in the snapshot001
click on ok in the error window, closes the screen,leaves the little control GUI (in top corner of screen as in screenshot002)  but starts playing the dvd ...can hear the audio & see the counter running in the little GUI & also in terminal ...can access the right click menu, but clicking on anything there brings back the error window...

I can post the output from the terminal if needed...

oldude:

Press the Ctrl+Esc keys, to bring up the Process Table. Scroll down to see if mplayer or gmplayer still has a process open, and kill it if it does. Having played with the first command, the movie should also play with the second command, if all mplayer processes shut down properly. If they didn't, they can still have a lock on the display.

Did you also check for an open process for mplayer? They will show as separate processes.

Also, if you want to post screen shots of errors, post them in a form large enough to be clearly read. The first two were way too small.
