For those of you finding much lower clock speeds, if it is a laptop most of the time stepping is enabled by default, so you will get processor throttling for battery/heat.

Those on Dektops showing lower clocks, it is a similar issue "green" computing is a big thing, so you hve throttling / stepping enabled in your bios.

Not here ..... stepping disabled in BIOS   ;)

stepping        : 3
cpu MHz         : 1200.000

I have no idea what is going on to be honest ...... showing 1200 now - up from 800 the other day ......

Desktop machine and no power management in place that I am aware of ......

EDIT
after some more tests it seems that the CPU is indeed altering in speed dependent on what is being run ..... I succeeded in getting it to 3200, and then it went back to 1600, 1200, 2000 etc.
It seems so that all is working as it should!

I must check again, but last time I was at this I disabled Speed Stepping in BIOS .... but it appears to be working as if it is enabled!

... maybe I just never caught it at the right time previously .....

regards.

Sorry to bring this one back, but I'm wondering about power saving and just getting started with experimenting.

Basically I seem to remember that I had "Cool&Quiet" set in the BIOS of this cheap Lenovo MB - and that played Ok with 2009 - KDE 3.3X. Testing now refutes that, which could simply point to motherboard or firmware.

I tried it again with 2010 and CPU frequency seems locked to 1000mhz. I unchecked "Cool&Quiet" in the Bios and got the normal specs for this CPU. Benchmarking and normal use shows that there really is a significant difference in performance and that this isn't an error in reporting.

It might be useful if people with earlier KDE3.5 versions would comment if setting "Cool&Quiet" works with scaling on their MB/processor. Likewise if turned off whether cpufreq etc work. Likewise KDE 4X and 2010

I never thought I would feel foolish for pushing older 32 bit Athlon chips so long...

Intel or AMD - there sure are some good deals now.

I think these are the actual CPU frequencies but not the maximum frequency. As long as the frequency could be changed in order to save power and the chip lifespan so usually we'll see lower freq's than the max.

Does anybody have an idea what the red row means?

AMD Rocks the socks of Intel

I dunno... I'd put my Core i7 920 up against anything AMD currently makes. That said, I love AMD. I just think they allowed themselves to get behind, yet again, in the CPU war.

BTW, I call foul. That command gives me 1600 MHz for my 2.67 GHz Core i7, but everything else reports that it's running at 2.668 GHz. I think there is a bug in that application.

I love them both too, because I have P3's, a K6-450 and even earlier stuff around which work as well now as new. If only other consumer goods could be priced so competitively and last so long.
I did take note of a comment on Steve Gibson's "Security Now" podcast on RISC computers. He figures that we might be much further ahead had not Intel been so anxious to provide backwards compatibility. And the reason they were anxious is because otherwise they would have lost lots of sales to AMD.
Now of course even Macs are running Intel processors because the pricing is so great. And my ancient processors will run a graphical interface and do real work. So we can't yell too hard about CISC.
Even my Cyrix branding iron CPU will - still. So branding iron temps haven't killed it yet.
It says a lot for processors when ancient stuff will do most tasks (slowly). My favorite Athlon mobile Barton (overclocked and still going all these years later) will do 80% of what I need. Perhaps it says more when a $100 replacement will now save money on power, and work far faster.
