Update wants to remove 'kdeaddons'?
« on: January 03, 2010, 06:39:49 AM »
Synaptic tells me there are 7 upgrades available this morning; both 2009.2 & KDE4.  Using pclosusers.com as repository.
Most are libs, but what concerns me is the removal of 'kdeaddons'.
Am afraid to update if removing this pkg will result in some programs not working; such as alsa, dkms, media players, etc.
Have these updates worked out ok for others?

I don't think it would "break" anything, but if you use any of the effected programs, you might notice the difference. I guess it depends on the user. If you open synaptic & type kdeaddons in the search box, you'll see the individual addons for the programs that would be effected. You can install those, which should restore what was lost by removing kdeaddons. Reinstalling kdeaddons, for me at least, has unresolved dependencies that I haven't yet figured out. It requires a package that is already installed, so I don't know why kdeaddons won't install. Anywho, that's why I installed the individual addons that were lost.... just in case. I haven't noticed any issues yet....

Thanks, CQ.........believe I'll pass on the updates.  As the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
I'm sure if I installed them, there would be problems.

For the past three days UN has been displaying a notice not to upgrade. I've tried Synaptic and it wants to remove several packages. Today, reloaded and the upgrade pkgs increased from 240 to 249. It wants to remove even more, now kdeaddons (I'm stil running KDE 3.5.10). Pkgs it want's to remove: ekiga, evolution data server, kdeaddons, libautotrace4, libdirectfb0.9_25-devel, libpq4, python-ctypes. Choosing, for example, just to install ekiga, brings up dependencies: libdirectfb1.4_0, libopal3.6.6, libopal3.6.6-plugins, libvncserver0. None of these libs are listed in to be upgraded, but as not installed. Could it be that ekiga now needs new libs that were not originally installed or that they have been renamed? I'm relatively sure that the upgrade would work, then I would have to reinstall those pkgs that have been removed. Apparently, this is a dependency script problem. I'll wait a bit.

cyrwyn,
i am sure packages do their best to catch and fix all dependency problems but you are asking a bit too much of them by sitting on more than 240 packages and expect thing to update smoothly ..not to mention on the desktop that is no longer supported. Textar already said he will not be fixing anything that breaks on kde3
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..

You should probably stop updating if you are still clinging to KDE 3 and switch to youcantoo's frozen repository.

I think that's what we've been looking for.

Cheers.

Texstar already said he will not be fixing anything that breaks on kde3

and these 240 were only a part of a much bigger update, plus another update wave is on its way :)  When updating that many packages some small issues may happen, which will be fixed afterwards, or, as already mentioned several times, may break certain features in KDE3. KDE = KDE4 and KDE3 is no longer maintained.
My personal view is this: PCLinuxOS is the core system with a variety of window managers to choose. KDE3 works fine from the latest iso but with every month more you are more likely to get problems when updating KDE3, or alternatively use the frozen repo mentioned by Tex before. KDE4 works fine, if you don't think so or don't like KDE4 then you have other window managers to play with, like LXDE, E17, XFCE, or Gnome. You will have to learn the pros and cons and peculiarities of each of these window managers, you may like one or another, that's just a question of taste. KDE4 is one of them and has replaced KDE3, learn it or leave it, that's the way it is.  ;)

Tex, I know where you are.  It's damned if you do and damned if you don't.  Gotta move on.
If KDE screws up the Linux world for users, it surely isn't your fault.
You took their desktop and made it so very usable for us former Windows folks.  And we will always be grateful.
You have made Linux simple for us.  That in itself is so commendable.

I will just ignore any future update notifications for 3.5.

Maybe, just maybe the developers will realize the error of their ways as did the Redmond boys with Vista.
KDE4 is a joke, just as Vista was for the Windows crowd.
Just remember us converts appreciate what you have done.

Do what 'ya gotta do!

Hi teddyred,

así es la vida (that's life)
we remove ourselves with every update from a stable KDE3
we have to say goodbye to our beloved KDE

forget all updates or you come sooner or later in the "dependence hell"
My workstation is still working with kde3, but ... ???

I was just hoping that KDE3 would remain stable until KDE4.4 is released. Then I might make the change.

I was just hoping that KDE3 would remain stable until KDE4.4 is released. Then I might make the change.
And I was just hoping KDE3 would remain usable until the gang came up with a PLCOS iso that installed KDE4.x as default, so I could just wipe my system and re-install.  It's beginning to look like that's not gonna be the case.   >:(

Thankfully, I have several systems available to me, so when KDE3 finally breaks on one of them, I can recover well enough to update to KDE4...   :)

I have to get the supporting library and programs in place before I can do a KDE 4 iso. This of course will break various things in KDE 3.

Tex, take your time and ignore the complaints you get from the uninitiated.  We know you have to work with what's available.....and that's KDE.  Just hope it pans out.
Still have a working KDE 3.5.............for now.   And it's the cat's meow!!!
