Multiple versions of packages reported by Synaptics
« on: January 01, 2010, 01:55:12 AM »
Hello guys, I have downloaded and installed PClos 2009.2 (kde3.5 pclinuxos-2009.2.iso) and the 1st thing i did was to fire up Synaptics and Update the packages.

I used this repo http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/ main extra nonfree kde gnome

However I was shocked that it wanted to download 650 MB of packages!! How can that be since I installed the latest distro? It was like downloading the wholedistro all over again. Anyway I went through the upgrading process.

After the upgradation, when i open Synaptics again, it showed this error "W: There are multiple versions of "gamin" in your system." along with plenty of other packages duplicity.

My question is how can this happen? How can I solve this? There are version 2007, 2009 and even 2010 packages installed. I don't know how this happened.

I like the simplicity of PClos but yet this unexpected event has spoiled it.

2009.2 was released 07-13-2009 which was 5 months ago and was current at the time of release.

Pclos is a rolling release. It is made up of packages from 2007-2010. They only get re-dated when they are rebuilt.

I know it's been a while since the original posts here, butI have a similar issue and neither Synaptic or Apt-Get is allowing me to do anything until this issue is resolve. Thus hoe can dupclean be installed?

Thanks,
John

Hi John,
Which problem do you have? If it's duplicate rpm files did you try Texstar's recommendation?
Your post needs a little clarification.  ;D Please post more info.  :) :)
I'll check in.

Thanks johnmart. I did try Texstars recommendation and after a bbit of work everything seems to be working again. I am still removing a few remaining duplicates by hand in Synaptic, but I'll do that as I have time here and there.

Thanks for your offer of help.
