pclinux os hard drive install without CD drive question
« on: January 02, 2010, 05:40:40 AM »
I have read your guides for installing Pclinuxos without a CD drive.  This is useful as I have a Compaq NC4000 laptop which does not have a CD drive.  I note the easiest way to do this is with Unetbootin, however it makes reference to dual booting with windows etc.  The computer is currently installed with windows 7, however I want rid of windows completely and just want to install PClinux OS.  I don't want to dual boot or keep windows in any way.  What is the easiest way to do this?  I just want one partition on the drive where I install PClinuxos permanently, that is how simple I want the system.
What about if I were to take the hard drive out of the laptop and connect to my windows desktop via a usb caddy I have.  Could I then use Unetbootin to install to my laptop hard drive before I place it back into the laptop?

I would be really grateful for your help on this, as I just want the simplest way to get running.

Thanks Dave

While installing, select "format disk." Do not check "use existing partitions" as your option. It will warn you all data on this disk/partition will be lost. Sounds like you're okay with that. In my case, it wouldn't let me format the entire disk. I had to check "use existing partitions." However, if you select BOTH partitions to format, it will wipe Win-Don'ts from its own partition.

You may need to do this from either a liveusb stick or a livecd running on an external usb dvd drive.

I've been running PCLOS-only on my tiny 8gig flashdrive Aspire One for about a year now and never looked back. Occasional glitches, but nothing the forum couldn't quickly fix.
Fair warning: I am a whiny, selfish brat who should be denied access to 2010, per a moderator. Box: Acer Aspire One 110-xxxx model. XP wiped (and flushed), 2010 gnome (despite mod) grafted onto 8g flash HD via livecd.
