<Solved!>Shared Folders and Guest Additions
« on: September 04, 2012, 08:14:16 PM »
I have installed and reinstalled VB using the Get Virtual box script and still have the problem I will describe. My host is KDE 4.83 PCLOS fully updated and my guest is MiniPCLOS KDE 4.83 fully updated. I'd like to enable Shared Folders but I keep getting the error message Guest Additions aren't installed. I have tried using the button for install Guest Additions from within the running guest but it seems to do nothing.

After looking at posts here from terminal within guest as root I tried "VBoxLinuxAdditions.run" but I get "command not found". From looking on line I tried "/VBoxLinuxAdditions.run" and "./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run" all of which returned command not found.

Then I tried the suggestion found in another thread here of from within guest downloading from Synaptic. Again it seemed to do nothing.

While I want to enable shared folders that is my secondary concern. My main question is how do you know if Guest Additions are installed and how do you install them if they aren't?

Any help appreciated.

With a windows guest it is easy just click the etx install, but you need to be in safe mode to get the 3d installed.

In a linux guest I find mounting the extensions iso from (/opt/VirtualBox/additions/) and opening the virtual cd they are on and running the script is best - it should ask for root if it is installing it properly and show the editor doing all the stuff as it runs.

Just follow along with the screenshots and you should be fine.

Left click on the VBoxLinuxAdditions.run file. The program will run in a terminal window.

At which point you can close all windows and reboot the VM.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

If you already have the Guest Addition ISO disregard the next bit.

One of a few ways is to download Guest Additions from the link below and download VBoxGuestAdditions_4.1.20.iso   (if you are not using VBox version 4.1.20 go to appropriate folder and download it from there)

http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.1.20/

After you've downloaded it, load VBox and go to Settings for your MiniPCLOS KDE 4.83 VM and choose Storage - then add the Guest Additions ISO as you would any other)

Start your MiniPCLOS KDE 4.83 VM and when the desktop has loaded  go to Devices > Install Guest Additions

If you don't get any prompts, open Dolphin and in the Places panel you should see an entry for the Guest Additions ISO

Select the ISO and a list of files will load - please click on the one named  autorun.sh

A Konsole window will appear and a second later another window will open where you'll be prompted to enter the root password - do so and then let it run it's course. At the end it should say something like

Press Return to close this window... - do so, and the Konsole window will close.

Reboot and you should be good to go

It  Worked! Thank you all for your replies. This needs to be stickied. I'm sure it could help many. Special thanks to Old-Polack for the screen shots. I know that took a lot of effort.

One note to future readers. Clicking the "Install Guest Additions" button didn't work the first couple of times I tried it but the third or fourth time time was the charm.
