SOLVED - Shut down problem
« on: December 24, 2009, 09:47:00 PM »
Minime is most reluctant to shut down. ;D

When I press the Shutdown icon I get a 10 second wait, then a black screen, another 10 second wait then a box offering

Welcome to localhost
Username
Password

At the bottom of the screen is aother mini menu with more options. I press Shutdown

Another box appears with options to Turn Off and Restart

I press Turn Off. Occasionally this works but I more often have no alternative but to shut off the power.

In Session Manager Confirm logout and Offer Shutdown options are both disabled.

I have tried disabling acpi and apic. The only thing that does work properly and quickly is to enter Halt in the cli.

Xmas wishes to all

Offer shutdown options should be checked, and acpi is what does the actual turning off of the power, so should be on.

Thanks Old-Polack but it didn't make no difference

Are you "saving sessions" ? I personally don't use this option but some like to leave things open and shutdown having the previously open work ready at next startup.
Why?

No - I start with a new session.

Shut down is an unexplained problem of PCLinuxOS kde, Minime, Gnome and ZenMini. Despite all the posts on the forum, the problem is not solvable. A real shame because PCLinuxOs will be a good, very good linux distro.

Thanks Giovanni. But I never had problems before.

Anyway I'll just go on using HALT in the cli. It's very fast.

And thanks too to maddog and Old-Polack.

Solved - sort of. ;D

And I have had no problem with it for the past 2+ years either. Just happened in the past week or so. I'll do a bit of tinkering... ::)

Well now... It has solved itself. ???

It takes a long 30 seconds but at least it does shut down properly without the need for Ctrl=alt-dels and hard switch offs.

I don't think I did anything different - except that I ran Sweeper.

Could that have done it? Whatever....

Whatever your problem is with shutdown, it is local to your specific machine, not a general problem with PCLinuxOS. I've been running PCLinuxOS since the very first public release on every machine I've owned since then, and have not experienced any problem with shutdown, ever. There are six computers currently in this house, four running PCLinuxOS, one running SuSE 8.2, and one running Windows XP for gaming purposes. The four running PCLinuxOS range in age from this unit I'm currently writing this on, which is an old 2002 Compaq, Athlon XP 2100+, to three home built AMD64 x2 dual core machines built in 2008, two in June and one in December. None have had any problems with shutdown.

Beg to differ, o-p. I've never had  problems with shutdown, either, but they are cropping up here and there. Here's a recent one I find mystifying: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,66738.0.html

Again, local problem with the individual machine. 10,000 people install an OS, 10-20 have a problem. It could be a similar defect in the hardware, if they all happen to run on the same brand hardware, could be a defect in the BIOS, if they have different MBs, but the BIOS is the same, could be BIOS settings not being set right, could be something different on each machine, but with the same end result. The 9,980-9,990 users not having a problem prove the problem is not in the software itself, but has an outside source, local to certain specific machines.

Troubleshooting involves finding what's different on that specific machine that makes it not run like the vast majority, then trying to find a setting or other work-around that fixes, or compensates for, the root problem, if it's possible at all.

Quick guess, some process is still running and the system waits until that process finally quits, then, and only then, executes the final power off signal. What the process is, I haven't a clue, but I have seen this on my own machines. If one waits, and the machine does eventually shut down on it's own, the next time the wait is usually shorter, and usually by the third or forth shutdown is back to a normal shutdown, as soon as the last message in the shutdown procedure is posted. Kind of like the system is learning a better order to shut down the individual processes. The last time I saw something like this was a few years ago, on a newly built machine. Within a few days everything was shutting down smoothly and the delayed shutdowns never reoccurred. I did nothing to force the shutdown; just waited until the machine did it on it's own.

The only time I've ever had a machine completely refuse to shutdown was on a 1997 Sony, running Win95 OSR2, and still under warranty. I took it back to where I bought it, and was told all machines told you when it was time to push the button, that they didn't actually cut the power. I told them the machine had always shut down completely, on it's own, and that this was something new. That went back and forth for a while, then while messing with the settings, I found a reference to apm being turned off. I had no Idea what that meant, but turned it back on, and on shutdown the machine went through the process then powered off, in front of the tech staff. Turns out none of them had a clue what apm was, and had never seen a machine power itself off. Before I left, they were running around the store, checking the new machines, and all that had the OSR2 installed, did, in fact, do a full power off on shutdown.

I learned two things from that. Never trust the tech guys when they tell you, you don't understand how a computer works. That means they are the ones who don't understand, or they are giving you a snow job so they can charge big bucks for a simple setting change, once you leave the machine with them. That leads directly to lesson two; know your own machine. If one takes the time to learn how ones own machine functions, one is never at the mercy of the stores "highly trained technical staff." Most seem trained to only take your money. Think Geek Squad, and I rest my case. ;D ;D
