Public servers have newer packages than PASS?
« on: December 23, 2009, 12:40:52 PM »
just tried to update from PASS and there was nothing new. Yet, the public mirrors had newer version already available. How comes?

Was someone too tired?  :P  or from now it will be  public = testing  :-\   just joking  ;D
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

What I found strange was that there is a newer version of udev that is on the PASS testing server that is not on the public servers, yet the public servers have newer other packages.  The real head scratcher is that the newer udev requires a newer kernel, so udev in testing is no good w/o a newer kernel that is only in public ???

Tex has asked the testers to use the public servers for the latest round of official testing to keep bandwidth within limits on the PASS server, therefore those new kernels and such are not on PASS. It's a matter of economy. ;)

I think the confusion is that for instance on my system, using the public server pclosusers I am showing a number of upgrades available for my system including printerdrake, pulse audio etc. On the pass server however, I show no upgrades available.  This is not with testing activated. Most people assumed pass got upgrades first.

That's not assumed, it is stated clearly on the Donations page: http://pclinuxos.com/?page_id=7

All new software packages appear on this server first then at a later date, the public servers get the packages.

Well, okay, not so clearly - it is a sentence with bad puntuation! ;D

In any case, I don't have a PASS account for the benefits to me; I donate for the benefit to Texstar. It is still a little puzzling, however, even with old-polack's explanation. I haven't been testing for some time now, but the PASS condition persists.

There's a limited amount of bandwidth per month on the pass sever. We're near the end of the month and of the bandwidth allowance.

Is it recommended to update then from the public repo, or just wait and update from the PASS server?  I haven't seen any upgrades available from the PASS server in the last couple of weeks and I was wondering if there were going to be some updates that would make kde4 run better.

It is your choice - update now from a public server or update later from pass.

Hey, if I donate more money, will that help get the PASS server up longer each month for everyone else? ;D

Never mind, I will donate again this week anyway!  :D

PASS not up-to-date??
« Reply #12 on: December 30, 2009, 07:18:14 PM »
Is the PASS not sync'd up?  I see some upgradables when using ibiblio, but not from PASS.  The version numbers are, indeed, higher than the equivalent PASS version.  (Yes, I did remember to reload after switching repositories...)  I did not do the updates, yet, so I could compare the two repositories.

your question was asked and is already answered somewhere on the forum ..the pass server was near its bandwidth limit for the months and that is why packages are a bit behind there ..things should be back to normal sometime in a few days
.. 3 things are certain in life : death, taxes and software bloat ..
.. tell me something i don't know, something i can use as i struggle to reason with the world around me ..
