[Solved] Upgrade broke Option 3g Quicksilver
« on: December 23, 2009, 02:42:25 AM »
I set up this 3g card to work using minime (before 2009). The setup has continued to work through all of the recent upgrades. That is until about two weeks ago. I set it up using kppp, like this:
http://www.pclosmag.com/html/Issues/200907/page11.html

I've also used upgraded kernels from testing, 2.6.27.x, and built the 2.6.31.x kernel using xmenuconfig. All of these still worked. This is my main install, but I still build packages and do some (relatively) safe testing. I am asking for help, but this is not a completely standard install. hwdetect, udev, hal, ???. Something has taken over control of the modem, but doesn't let me configure it. PCC has never worked for this, but it seems to want to try. It is automatically recognized and a connection configured, each time I boot up with the modem attached. After trying to configure it in PCC and failing, I tried to remove the connection in PCC and restarting it with KPPP. The modem seems to come on, but I can't connect.

I'm rambling, because it is very late here. If anyone is willing to takes this on, I'll be more precise and clear thinking in the morning!

Just in case any sees this post, for the record I never browse the forums topless. (I swear!) ;D

Ok, update:

Although I have several testing kernels installed, the problem exists on all kernels. The kppp configuration still is correct, because I can make a connection using a Livecd of 2009.2, using my previous steps. I don't believe the drak* tools were upgraded just before it quit working, but maybe hwdetect.lst or something like it was.

If I remove the 3g connection in PCC, then relink /dev/modem to /dev/ttyHS0, kppp seems to connect ok and net_applet shows a working connection, but I can't get through to the internet. Just to check, I pinged google and nothing happens. I tried a couple of different dns settings in kppp, but it made no difference.

This problem still exists with 2009 upgraded and all of the betas.

I recently tried again. I started PCC from a konsole window so that I could get some error messages. Maybe this is a tip on where to begin:

Thanks for the tip. I've tried sakis once, without luck. But I did not try any of the troubleshooting steps, so I'll try again and report back.

Using kde4 2010, I upgraded to the 2.6.33.4-pclos1.bfs kernel, tried to setup with PCC and still no luck. I tried again with kppp like I did in 2009 and it worked again! I wish I knew which package was somehow interfering, but it doesn't really matter for me. Just in time to upgrade to 4g!
