I've tried all those but I just can't find the right combination to switch desktops with the 3D effect. I can switch them with alt-tab but only with a flat effect. I have to use the screen edge method to get all the desktops and then click on the one I want. Which I'm happy with, so the 3d effect is not that important.

hmmm - interesting - I had cover switch working with KDE4 before upgrading to version 2010.  Since then however, it has not worked.  When I go into "Configure Your Desktop" and Desktop Effects, I get the information message the Compositing has been disabled because XComposite and XDamage are not available.  When I check in Synaptic however, I see that libxcomposite1 and libxdamage1 are installed.  Would like to get Cover Switch back again but it seems some components are missing.  Any ideas as to what is needed to get this working once again?

Gave the link a review and have both set to off but still when I try to able compositing its says its not available.  "Compositing is not supported on your system.
Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available."   ... and that despite libxcomposite1 and libxdamage1 being installed.

You probably need to configure your video drivers..  this can be done using PCC (or the command XFdrake from console)

Credit must go to the tuxmachines.org rss feed, that's where I found it.

Well, thanks for sharing it here. Anything to speed up the learning curve of using KDE4 is much welcome.
Also I am especially happy to see 'Show Desktop' has finally been added to the list of 'Active Screen Edge Actions' in KDE 4.4
