next version will have the fix for the problem you have encountered.
In the mean time,you can use it normally by first running these commands before starting "qt-update-notifier"
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
export LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8:en_US:en
I think they should also work when they are prepended in the "exec" line in "/etc/xdg/autostart/qt-update-notifier-autostart.desktop" and "/usr/share/applications/qt-update-notifier.desktop"
