[SOLVED] Bypassing PCC for Printer Installation & Configuration

I am using HPLIP 3.10.2 under PCLinuxOS 2010 LXDE, and it is working with no problems. After HPLIP was installed using "hp-setup", the install was checked using, "hp-check -r", which will display any errors in the install. See the HPLIP website for post-install instructions, found under "manually installing HPLIP". The automatic installer, run by "hp-setup" will not automatically edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf to read: Grp lp  User lp, as it must be configured. "Grp sys" must be changed to "Grp lp". "User lp" remains as it is. Things will not work properly if this is not done.

Make sure to run "hp-check -r" to see if any dependencies need to be added. Also, copy-and-paste the output displayed when "hp-setup" has finished to a text file. The link to the plugin should be saved and used to manually download the file, to be stored for possible future use. You will then not need to go online to do a re-install, if necessary.

Note that I have an HP Laserjet P1006 monochrome printer.

I'm intrigued by this plugin you keep mentioning, as I've not heard of one being required before - what purpose does it serve?

How is your printer connected - USB, ethernet or wireless?

Thanks for link, I am just checking out LXDE too, something odd here too but I have an idea.

..the wiki was taken down awhile back because of too many attacks by hackers; the wiki link I posted no longer exists.

thanks for replying, it is not a problem, I am just reviewing printing in general and have arrived at LXDE, as I am going to experiment with LXDE by unloading  all printing support and rebuild if I can. I have something very specific in mind. I just did not want to overlook anything.

I will keep your suggestions in mind but it is going a bit over my head at this stage and does not quite line up with my thinking either.  The idea of a minimalist approach was what caught my attention but it needs to be much simpler for me.

The HP LaserJet P1006 is USB. The plugin is downloaded and installed by the HPLIP automatic installer when "hp-setup" is run. As far as I can tell, the plugin provides the necessary PPD file for the printer. The link to my plugin is:

The PPD file is installed as:

/usr/share/ppd/HP/hp-laserjet_p1006.ppd.gz

where the specific PPD needed is extracted and installed during the setup procedure. A list of printers will be displayed -- one to be selected by the user, and it will then be installed. I do not know if a printer-specific plugin is required by all HP model printers.

The HPLIP install on my P3 machine (PCLinuxOS 2009.4 LXDE) was as minimal as possible. CUPS and HPLIP were installed, then needed dependencies were added after "hp-check -r" was run. HPLIP was installed by default by PCLinuxOS 2010 LXDE, so I did not have total control as to the number of packages that were installed. A lot of "extras" went onto the HDD. I would say, however, that the "extras" installed by default could be removed and that the basic installation could be reduced to just CUPS and HPLIP. "Printerdrake" was not installed by me on the P3, so I avoided "extras" being pulled-in by it.
