ram usage?
« on: December 05, 2009, 01:28:59 PM »
Hi, I'm considering PCLOS but not sure which version to go with.
I'm more into gtk. I prefer lightweight.
Can u tell me what are the ram usage of miniMe-KDE, zen-Gnome and pheonix-xfce?

hello and welcome to the forum

can you post your system specs?

in linux it is important the amount of ram but it is also important other details like cpu class and speed between other details

to run kde3 and 4 you need 512 to 1 gb of ram, other desktops will run very well with 256 or even less but i don't recommend to run with less than 192mbs

aladinonl,

Minime KDE is a full KDE implementation, with a minimal installation of any of the "extras." You go in and add what you want/need.

The Zen-Gnome release is the same as Minime, but with the Gnome desktop.

Both Phoenix and PCLXDE are GTK based, and both are lightweight (and VERY fast) desktop environments. Both are capable on running on hardware as modest as a P-II with 128 KB RAM.

Hopefully, this answers your questions.

And ... BTW ... welcome to the PCLinuxOS forum!

Hi,
thanks for the welcome. :)

yeah i know the stuffs u guys just said. I scouted thru pclinuxos website and wiki a couple of times, watched the videos.

My specs are far more than enough to run all the versions.

It's just that I'm obsessed with streamline as much as possible.  That's why I asked for ram usage of each version before I actually download it.

Of what use is unused RAM? If you have more than enough, download and install the version you like best.  ;)

I know, but for some reasons, I always look for lightweight apps, streamlining things and getting things as lightweight as possible. And i like command line apps.

Pertaining to your suggestion, the version i like best is the most light weight one.

Tho i guess i would go with xfce version.

There's one more question tho:

can some one explain to me where's the difference between sidux and pclinuxos such that: sidux strictly require updating outside x while pclinuxos strictly require updating thru synaptic?

I think LXDE is a better choice for "light weight".
