Empathy 2.28 and Google Talk connection problems!
« on: November 24, 2009, 09:39:01 AM »
Hi all,

Can anybody share with successful settings of the latest Empathy 2.28.1.2?
I use PCLOS 2010 KDE 4.3.3
I think there is something wrong with libraries or something is missing.
I tested the latest Mandriva 2010 in Virtualbox and there Empathy is working just great.

Thanks in advance!

Well, seems I didn't gave enough info. I'm really sorry!
I'm also able to connect yahoo (imported settings from Pidgin), but I don't use yahoo account since google talk appeared.

So, I was talking about Google talk connecting with Empathy. I tried different settings found in different forums but none of them worked!

I like Empathy over the other messengers, it has everything, a good messenger needs - Video, Voice, and even Remote desktop support! So I would be happy to have it with all features in my system.

Thank you very much for your quick responses  :)

Actually, I had already tested the settings you posted and I did it again after your posting.

Same result - "Network error"

I tried reinstalling, completely removing and installing again - nothing works.

I'm not a Linux guru, I'm just a Linux admirer and can't go deep in codes and scripts, so if anybody can give me a hint how to get some output to make the problem more evident I would post it here. I guess posting screenshots will not help here much.

Thanks.

Well, the problem remains...

I reinstalled system and went back to PCLOS Gnome version but the result is just the same - Google talk refuses to connect via Empathy!

Any ideas?

My result:

The following depended packages upgraded while installing Empathy via Synaptic, but I guess something is missing and I need to add!

BTW, I can easily connect Gtalk via Pidgin, but unfortunately it lacks some great features that Empathy already has (Video/Voice conferencing and Remote desktop support).

Quick question: I use the "old" kernel (2.6.26.8.tex3), so can the above mentioned connection problem, somehow connected with kernel version?  ???

Texstar

Thank you very much for your responses.

Unfortunately the problem remains unresolved. I tried different settings and have installed all Empathy related packages, tried new install of the system but nothing helps.

My guessing:
1. The problem is not related to Firewall, because it does not connect without the firewall turned on.
2. The problem is not related to my Network/proxy settings, because Empathy works great on Mandriva2010 using the same settings.

So, I think the problem is in packaging.
After the Gnome upgrade from 2.26 to 2.28 some package/s got lost and Empathy only works on "old" installs, I mean old installs of Empathy 2.26 (and it's dependence's) and later upgraded to 2.28. But it does not work on New installs of Empathy 2.28 (lacking some "old" dependence's).

I hope the next release of PCLOS Gnome will be with Empathy in default install and will have the all features Voice/Video/File transfer/Remote desktop sharing (the most important for me).

Despite of all above mentioned The PCLinuxOS is the greatest Desktop and the most user friendly distro, I ever tested (I tested many of them) and the first and only Linux distro, I dared and installed on my friends/relatives machines, knowing that they will not have problems with the system.

Thank you Texstar!

Ok if you say so but the packages are direct ports from Mandriva and it works on my system because I'm using it daily.

Well, then I don't know.
I tested Mandriva2010 One/Gnome with default install of the Empathy
and Mandriva2010 Free/Gnome, downloaded and installed Empathy.
In both cases I was able to connect Google talk and use all features of the Empathy without any problems.

In case of PCLinuxOS I tried different settings without success.

Thanks.

I don't know either too. ;D I guess I have something else installed that makes it work.

Hello,

I've installed all the above packages and there is network error but once I install Pidgin with Empathy builds on a connection. If I remove Pidgin but again, the connection goes back no more and there is the aforementioned network error. Could it be the Pidgin provides a lib file which of Empathy is needed?

-L DE
Hallo,

Please excuse my English

I guess I have something else installed that makes it work.

That's what I am trying to explain :) (Maybe my English is lame because, it is not my native language).

I wonder, if there is any possibility (at PCLOS) to install an older package, i.e. Empathy 2.26, I mean downgrading the version and then upgrading?! Maybe the older package will fetch the missed package  ???
