Installing new fonts
« on: November 17, 2009, 07:12:46 AM »
Hi, I'm new to Linux and new to PClinuxOS after using Windows exclusively forever.  I installed 2009.1 in the spring and was instantly hooked, and have recently upgraded to 2009.2.  I love it.  Much better than the Windows 2000 Pro it replaced on my old machine.  After searching around the net and in the forums, I have not yet found a simple and efficient way to install new ttf and otf fonts to my system.  Since PCLOS is so full-featured, I thought it might have a font installer somewhere, but I haven't found it.  Can someone help with this?  Remember, I'm new to this and it took a while to work up the courage to ask the question.

Welcome to PCLinuxOS! :)
Start your PCLinux Control Center (PCC) -> System -> Manage, add and remove fonts :)

... or, just copy your fonts, as root in /usr/share/fonts, and restart XFS service :)

also if you have a specific font file .ttf just click on it and you can install from the preview window

I must be slow.  I still don't see "install" there.  Interesting font, by the way.

Animal, our new friend daveysprocketbrew is right. You may not have been read well, but he/she is on 2009.2, probably KDE 3.5.x, that's why, he/she is not seeing what you're seeing. Be patient and really try to help, not to confuse...

Peace :)

Sorry i thought thats what i was trying to do was really try to help???  Didn't know I was seeming impatient?

If i remember correctly kde 3.5 had the same option, i may be wrong as i haven't been on it for some time.

I'm sorry too, but you are wrong.
Here is what he/she probably see, when using 3.5.x Font Viewer:

Have a nice day :)

If I right-click on a TTF font, there is an "Install" option under "Actions".

I don't *think* I added anything additional that would have enabled this, but I have been running the install on this laptop for a long time, and I can't remember every configuration change / program addition I've made...

Hope that helps, some.

nice blunt way to put it but ok. I am wrong. :)

I still believe there in an install option in the dialog, probably under the file menu.

Yep, that's right - under KDE 3.5.x (Konqueror), right-click -> Actions, there is Install Option - no doubt. But, executed in this manner, it will install font as a "Personal" one, not "System" wide. Any way, the point was, that good, old Font Viewer (3.5.x) is not capable for installing fonts.

I do not know about otf fonts as I only have ttf fonts from my Windows days ......

To make those fonts available to me as user I put them all into one folder in my home space ...

home/<user_name>/.fonts     <==  note the period before the "fonts" name of the folder. that makes the folder hidden.

Once the fonts are there, after logging out and in they will be available to your applications.

regards.
