OMG, I didn't realized that the implication is quite different in the UK. I had to look at it on Wiktionary to realize it also means to commit suicide. I was brought up to know it means to best oneself. I've been had.

Must admit that I never heard it used in the context in which you did. (although I did realise what you meant)
To "better oneself"  would be the usual phrase I guess.

All my parts are being held together with toothpicks, paperclips and safety pins.  So a bit of superglue is welcome.
I was curious about 'top' too. Found at least 25 or more English idioms with top.

I am still moving into my new quarters at 2010.1 PCLinuxOS Avenue and it seems I haven't unpacked everything. And those things that I have unpacked I can't locate. And some of the new appliances in the place didn't come with the manuals.  :(

Oh Phooo, Ms_meme, I'm sorry to hear that.  I know it's tough when you've been living in the same place for a few years to have to pack up and move to a new place.. Personally I would like to 'arrive' and get settled in.  I'm sure when you have everything arranged you will be back in 'full swing'.   I was just missing ya, and thought I'd give a shout..
