An excuse for the mangling of something where it no longer resembles the original piece that it was based on. Common in film making and books when the author or director changes the story line, characters, setting etc. to try and draw in more viewers/readers. A derogative term in all senses.
artistic license
describes the freedoms artists (or writers, film makers, etc) take with the facts in the process of creating; disregarding facts for the sake of the art

The right that an artist (occasionally called artistic license) or writer has, to let him or her deviate from fact or conventional ideas. This is usually to make things more interesting, or try to introduce radical ideas.
