error= mounting /union failed : no device found - KDE4.3.2
« on: November 09, 2009, 10:23:29 AM »
hi....

I tried to remaster my - just right kde4 pclos and it threw me a strange error....

I tried all the options and got similar results but for one..which was worse.. let me list them

1- default live CD  = as it did not find SCSI and usb , it failed to mount my initrd and gave me a md5sum error the exact error is "/initrd/cdrom/isolinux/media check failed"

2- sata probe, and other options found my SCSI, usb and loaded them successfully, it also booted by initrd files

but it gave the following errors

mounting /union file system failed : no such device
/var/tmp - no such file or directory

then it went to check hwdetect and gave the following error

/initrd/usr/sbind/hwdetect : notfound
/bin/sed : not found

then it said kernel panic. try passing init=option to kernel and it froze there
had to reset the computer manually

i did search the forums but could not find a solution for this problem

any help will be appreciated, as i need to repartition my system.

Vinoth.

PS: the default live CD worked well. though i faced problem of dropping to limited shell, i overcame this by performing a media check , which invariably started the kde4 (dint know the reason :) )

system configuration

toshiba l300 scsci hdd , intel gm 960/965 chipset 2 gb ram

I am having a similar issue with an iso I am testing.  Works fine as a live-cd but get union error when used as a live-usb.  Will be following this topic with interest.

What kernel are you using for your remaster?

Got nearly the same errors. LiveCD booted and got to, setting up union file system, mount:mounting unionfs on /, union failed: no such directory.......... a series of /etc/rc.d.sysinit: line 550:/bin/sed: not found lines , errors on lines 552,555,556 and ends with ,kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init=options to kernel. I have a picture of the screen but don't know how to include it in the post. I burned this with k3b at 2x speed. Current updated KDE 4. Did the remasterme  from terminal  and had no errors during the remaster.

I'm having the same problem.  I've run four remasters, using various different options from two different (recently updated) systems using kernels 2.6.26.8.tex4 and 2.6.27.31.tex5 and each of them has given the same errors noted in previous posts.

I used the most recent one to create a Live-USB and that gives the same failure... failed to mount union file system, whole list of 55x errors ending in kernel panic.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a fix or workaround?

Thanks.

While testing a remaster frontend, I ran into the same problem.
I figured out that the problem was that I was specifying unionfs as the filesystem. When I ceased to specify that option, eveything worked.
Might help.

Having the same problem as others posted here.  Successfully created a live remaster from within kde4.  Burned onto DVD.

The DVD stops with “Kernel panic – not syncing: No init found.  Try passing init= option to Kernel.

How does one accomplish what musonio suggests?

If you haven't explicitly specified unionfs as the filesyste, it's likely that it won't be the same issue that I pointed out above.
I guess.

Hi Don't know if this is relevant but think I saw somewhere on the forum Tex mentioned about when remastering adding ufs=unionfs, can't remember in what context though, sorry if this is of no help, or its already been stated, just thought I would mention it.  :) Good luck.

Thanks for suggestion OnlyHuman, I tried it but it didn't work in my case.  At this point I'll just wait for 2010 release and install.  I'm guessing folks are a bit busy getting 2010 ready and just don't have time to waste on these situations that will likely be resolved with new release.
