The rc.local edit caused my keyboard to act strangely. I had to press the Fn key to get a p or 7, 8, 9, 0 (zero) or anything other than blue key.

After removing that line and rebooting, everything is OK again.

It's working perfectly on my machine have re-checked so no idea what is causing your issue. I deleted the line and cut and pasted it back from here, and it works perfectly.

It would be nice to know if anyone else has tried the stuff in this thread and whether they have had any problems. Is there more than one version of the hardware?

I have now made the Fn-F7 and Fn-F8 keys useful.

I edited the .xbindkeysrc file in my Home folder again, adding the two lines:

"firefox https://mail.google.com"
  m:0x0 + c:151

After logging out and in, this key now starts Firefox with my GMail page. The line in quotes could have been made to run thunderbird or kmail, etc.

As for Fn-F8, I decided to use it to switch desktops. Being as I make my panels hide, it's not always the quickest thing to switch desktops using the pager on the panel, so I opened KDE Control Centre/Configure Your Desktop > Computer Administration > Keyboard and Mouse > Global Keyboard Shortcuts. On the right hand panel, I selected for KDE Component: KWin. I scrolled down to "Switch to Next Desktop" and clicked to select the shortcut. Pressed Fn+F8, and "F28" appeared as the shortcut, which I saved. Whilst at it, I set Ctrl+Fn+F8 for "Switch to Previous Desktop". Applied the changes.

I now have useful functions on most of the keys.

Can you tell me how you got the data for the rc.local line:
setpci -s 00:02.1 F4.B=FF

I will try it on my machine to see if I get the same thing. Maybe there is different hardware.

Did you do the xbindkeys -k test to find out if your keys were returning different codes to mine? Do xbindkeys --help in a konsole to see how the options work. Also xbindkeys -mk

As you can see some of the keycodes there are different to mine also, I assumed it was because of a different kernel. I will amend all of this if necessary or write a new guide when the new release comes out.

I think you misunderstand. Everything works fine with the Fn keys just the way you said it would.
The problem I have now is just with the
setpci -s 00:02.1 F4.B=FF
line in rc.local.
It really doesn't matter, though.

OK that's strange and probably explains why it didn't work when you tried the "advanced method" of setting the brightness. I'm concerned that if you boot up with the mains disconnected you may get a dull screen that you can do nothing about. Maybe there are firmware variations. If you can find another versions of that line that works for you, and post it, it would be vary helpful.

Go back to the first post in this thread if you have come to this one using "new". It will be much easier to get the NC10 working once PCLinuxOS 2010 release comes out.
